Buddhist, Muslim refugees clash in Indonesia, 8 dead

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Muslim and Buddhist refugees from Myanmar clashed at a refugee camp in Indonesia on Friday in a riot in which eight people were killed and 15 were wounded, media reported.
Rioters used wooden sticks, knives and iron bars to attack each other during a two-hour clash at an immigration center in Sumatra island, media said, quoting police. More than 20 Myanmar nationals were arrested.
The riot broke out after an argument over recent sectarian violence between majority Buddhists and minority Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.
Thousands of Rohingyas flee from Myanmar each year on rickety boats seeking refuge and jobs in Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, but the number has swelled since unrest last year.
Indonesia is also a common transit point for people seeking asylum in Australia.
An estimated 800,000 Rohingyas live in Myanmar but are officially stateless. The Myanmar government denies them citizenship, regarding them as illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. But Bangladesh does not recognize them as citizens.

Even 5 Jews in danger in my country would set an uproar. 80000 is an entire city worth of refugees. How can Muslims ignore their suffering like this? It is inhumane.

Only Turkey came forward to help these refugees with aid, others simply didn't care.

Here people are talking about pilght of Muslim in Myanmar but in very same forum one thread is running 'Myanmar refugee muslim killed 8 Buddhists in Indonesia after hearing voilence in Myanmar'.
Dude, Myanmar Muslim are not getting chance to kill Buddhist in Myanmar other will not only kill them they will cut them into pices.

Buddhist - Muslim relations have taken a nosedive lately. This is overall bad news, as this reduces the space for moderates on all sides and strengthens extremists.

Some muslims will say this is result of anti-islam propaganda everywhere, OTOH others will say this is due to more assertive pan Islamic impulses in muslim communities. As always, the truth will be somewhere in between.

BTW other than the annihilation of Buddhist heritage by muslim invaders in the subcontinent, was there any major Buddhist - muslim historical conflict? @Chinese dragon

Bangladesh already host over half a million Rohingya refugees since the late 70's.

I'd like to add...

I watched an amusing report on Burma on BBC the other day.

They interviewed a Buddhist monk. The monk claimed that the general Muslim population in Burma is rising too fast.

He said: "Once a tree grows too large, it'll inevitably fall on your house and destroy it."



If I'm not mistaken Muslims in Burma constitute only 4% of the overall population. Including..."Mongoloid" Muslims.

Additionally, Buddhist-owned businesses in Mandalay are given "approval stickers" to certify it as Buddhist-owned. That way, Muslims lose business.

Much of the stuff against Muslims are fueled by ugly rumors rather than facts.

Would Buddhist-Muslim relations take a nosedive on a world-wide basis? No. Business continues as usual.

What would inevitably happen is that Myanmar will never realize its full potential if this zoo continues. Bangladesh can unfortunately do very little. The solution and responsibility lies in ASEAN.

It's like chain reaction , you can choose to start it or not but once started it's very difficult to stop.
