In an unprecedented move, the Indian border force has paid Tk 500,000 in compensation to the family of a Bangladeshi citizen killed by the BSF in 2010.

The cheque was handed over to Shah Alam’s wife Beauty Khatun on Sunday.

Alam, a cattle trader, was shot dead along the Mirganj and Singparha border in Rajshahi on Nov 9, 2010.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) protested against the killing and held several flag meetings. Bangladesh also stepped up diplomatic efforts.As a result of the two-pronged engagement, the Border Security Force (BSF) finally agreed to pay up, BGB Rajshahi Sector Commander Col Sarkar Muhammad Shamsuddin said.

He said the BSF handed over the cheque to the BGB in a flag meeting on Jul 12.

“It is a milestone in the BGB-BSF relations,” Col Shamsuddin said.

No, BSF is doing no such thing. Everything depends on the specifics of the case and the compensation was offered based on the merit of the case. We ARE NOT planning on paying all smugglers. However there is an effort over the last two years now to minimize casualties and use non lethal enforcement and that has shown remarkable results.

1) Illegally crossing international border

2) Putting his minor child in harms way by making her climb a ladder over an international barbed fence at the dead of night and running away when discovered.

This will show that YOU care about filani and are not using her only for politics before asking questions to a foreign border protection force for shooting an intruder.

China India border is unmanned, ie it's not patrolled by BSF or Chinese border forces and it's not ratified yet. A better comparison will be India-Pak border where even a fly can trespass without getting shot at.
