BRT Peshawar Updates

Those buses parked in Peshawar sun for 3 years must be unusable by now. Makes me laugh to remember govt gave 6 months for it to complete and taunted PMLN of doing it slower, i guess the joke is on PTI now. It should be awarded the most pathetic and flawed project in history of KPK.

Who so ever decided to import those buses must be paraded in Peshawar, after making him wear PTI cap.

This Jangla/Grill with razor sharp spikes at the top is very dangerous and can prove fatal in case on an accident.

There shouldn't be any Jangla/grill. The person was hit because he crossed the main road and the Jangla obstructed his path and he had to climbit with sharp spikes at the top and was hit by the bus as can be seen. If there was no Jangla he could have crossed the BRTS corridor in seconds with no climbing of the Jangla.

What people will do in case of emergency if one has to cross the road to other side, not possible to cover one km. for the pedestrian crossing in case of heart attack emergency and with aged people.

Jangla also looks visually very bad, breaks the views and causes claustrophobia.

People will still cross the Jangla and the accidents will happen as people with stuck at the Grill/Jangla climbing it.

And with no Jangla people will still cross the corridor and in few seconds with view of the approaching buses...so no chances of any accident, as it is not that there will be heavy traffic on the BRTS corridor with 200-400 odd buses.

PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is likely to announce the date for the formal launch of the much-delayed Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) service on Aug 10.

Spokesman for the government Kamran Khan Bangash told Dawn that a meeting regarding the bus service’s launch would be held on Aug 9 or 10, where Chief Minister Mahmood Khan would be briefed about the bus project.

“The chief minister himself would announce a date for formal opening of the BRT project in light of the discussions at the meeting,” he said.

Mr Bangash said the provincial government didn’t want any issue to arise during the service’s launch, so all aspects of the project would be discussed in the meeting.

He said all aspects of the project, including the main corridor and installation of intelligent transport system, were in place and operational, while the buses were making trial runs on the corridor.

The spokesman said the provincial government had also decided to give away 100,000 Zu Card to the residents free of charge and their distribution was under way at BRT stations. He said the people were allowed to board buses during trial runs.

Long queues of the people seeking BRT cards are witnessed at BRT stations throughout the city.

The TransPeshawar company, which will manage the BRT operations, had announced bus fares last month.

According to it, ride of 5-10 kilometers will cost Rs10.

The company will charge commuters Rs20 for travel up to 15 kilometers, Rs25 for up to 20 kilometers and Rs50 for up to 40 kilometers.

It has also announced fines for pedestrians and vehicles entering the bus corridor.

In last meeting, the provincial cabinet had approved the appointment of Fayyaz Khan as the chief executive officer of TransPeshawar.

Work on the bus project had begun in Oct 2017 with the then chief minister, Pervez Khattak, setting six months deadline for its completion at the cost of Rs49 billion.

However, the frequent design changes and resulting retrofitting caused the project to miss the deadline and increased its cost by Rs17 billion to a staggering Rs66.43 billion.

Thereafter, the project managers kept changing the service launch date from May 20 to June 30 to Dec 31 in 2018 and March 23, 2019, and June 2020. However, the service wasn’t launched due to design and other issues.

In Sept 2018, a Supreme Court bench headed by the then chief justice, Saqib Nisar, stopped a National Accountability Bureau probe ordered by the Peshawar High Court into the alleged corruption in the BRT project.

In Dec 2019, the Peshawar High Court ordered the Federal Investigation Agency to look into the alleged corruption in the project.

A five-member FIA team formed in line with the court’s judgement had submitted its report to the court at the end of January. However, the apex court also stopped the agency from probing the project at the start of Feb this year.

PESHAWAR: All is set for the launching of much-awaited flagship project of the PTI government - Peshawar Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).

The provincial government is likely to inaugurate the project on August 14, but Chief Minister Mahmood Khan will formally announce the exact date after a final meeting today (Tuesday). Sources have confirmed that Prime Minister Imran Khan is very much interested to inaugurate the project, but the Prime Minister's House has not yet confirmed his availability.

Around Rs 70 billion BRT project consists of 27.5km main track and 31 stations while the length of feeder routes is 62km with 146 stops. The main track is connected to seven different areas of the city so that the people can travel from their areas in small buses to reach the main route. About 60,000 Zu travelling cards have been sold in just four days. Three mega commercial plazas would be completed in June 2021, but the bus parking areas are ready.

The PDA has already handed over the route and stations to Trans Peshawar which has already completed installation of Intelligence Ticking System (ITS).

According to official documents, the initial estimate for the BRT project was Rs49.43 billion, but the cost of the revised PC-1 had increased to Rs66.43 billion, which was further increased to Rs 70 billion. The Asian Development Bank and AFD had provided $593 million loan for the project, while the remaining amount was provided by the provincial government.

The estimated cost of BRT's civil work (27km track and stations), depots and ITS has increased from Rs32,863 million to Rs52,446 million. Expenditure on parking plazas and off corridor facilities has increased from Rs 95 million to Rs320 million. Bike sharing facility has cost Rs132 million. ADB's financial charges, supervision cost and advertisement expenditures have increased from Rs493 million to Rs1,156 million.

The cost of purchasing and dismantling the old buses in the city has increased from Rs 1,068 million to Rs 1,120 million. An amount of Rs 1,553 million was earmarked for PIU-Trans Peshawar and KPUMA, but the expenditure of these departments was reduced to Rs 800 million. Rs 1,680 million were earmarked for transfer of power, gas and telephone facilities, but it was reduced to Rs1,500 million.

Amount for the purchase of land was reduced from Rs2,213 million to Rs1,620 million. An amount of Rs7,875 million was allocated for the purchase of new busses which was decreased to Rs7,475 million. As per ADB directives, Rs1,375 million were allocated for contingencies.

Director General Peshawar Development Authority Zafar Ali Shah told Jang that the project has total cost of around Rs70 billion, which was increased due to increase in work scope, but the project is ready and can be started at any time. He said that construction of commercial plazas was started late having completion date of June 2021, but these plazas will not affect the BRT operation. The construction of the plazas will generate millions of rupees in the form of monthly rent for Trans Peshawar.

"BRT consists of 27km track and 31 stations while the length of feeder routes is 62 km in which 146 stops have been made to facilitate the people across the city", he added. Chief Executive Officer of Trans Peshawar Fayyaz Khan said that 220 buses for BRT have already reached Peshawar. He said that 92 buses of 18 meters will run on the main route while 128 small buses will run on seven feeder routes. "A private company has won the contract to run the operation and the trial and testing has already going on for the last one month. Routes and stations are also being monitored by 750 cameras", he said. The CEO further said about 300,000 passengers will travel in BRT buses daily for which all arrangements have been completed. After receiving the green signal from the government, the buses will start operating. He said that initially the number of passengers may decrease, which will gradually increase.

It may be recalled that the Bus Rapid Transit project was inaugurated in October 2017 by the then chief minister Pervaiz Khattak and he had announced to complete the project in six months. However, it is completed in three years.
