Not comparing but giving a benchmark to public transit losses. They simply cannot be profitable unless

1. Make other transport more expensive (high gas prices, high parking fees everywhere)
2. Increase pricing for the transport

Thats what they have done here in Sydney

Petrol is alot dearer than Diesal and LPG, almost all trucks are diesal and all buses are on LPG, parking fees are very high and not enough spaces. Plus they also have stopped traffic on many streets in the CBD and only open for Trams. So its cheaper and less headache to catch public transport than drive to work here.
Raise the fares

then far less people will use it. Better to have 2 people paying Rs50 than 1 person paying Rs75
