‘Brother of 1000 sisters’ held for raping child in MP
BHOPAL: An independent corporator, known for holding mass Rakhi festivals in Betul town and calling himself ‘brother of a thousand sisters’, was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl for over a year.

Police began investigating the accused, Rajendra Singh alias Kendu Baba, after someone sent them a letter anonymously, identifying himself as ‘Sajag Prahari’ (alert sentry), said Betulganj police station in-charge Motilal Kushwaha.


Additional security for the rape survivor, say cops

“The information in the letter was serious and we started our investigations. When we spoke to the survivor, she confirmed it and urged us to take action. We have assured the family that we will given them security,” Kushwaha said.


A case was registered against Singh on Sunday night. “We sent out teams to arrest the accused, and due to the increasing pressure, he surrendered at the police station today,” said Kushwaha.

Singh, a corporator of Jakir Hussain ward of Betul town, is famous for holding mass Raksha Bandhan events where thousands of women tie rakhis to him. “The accused is an influential person and had threatened the child with dire consequences. This was going on for nearly a year. In March this year, the girl’s mother came to know about it and went to Singh’s house to confront him, but she too was threatened and silenced,” said Kushwaha.


“We have increased police patrolling around the survivor’s house. Additional security will be provided if the family needs it,” he added.
