Team GB’s sailors are on the brink of a second gold medal of these Games thanks to an insurmountable 20-point lead built up by Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark in the women’s 470.

Even with double points on offer in today’s medal race, the duo who took silver at London 2012 need only to finish without being disqualified to be assured of victory.

After Giles Scott took GB’s first gold medal of the regatta in the Finn on Tuesday, Mills and Clark managed a third place in race 10 to move to a 28-point and seal the job.

New Zealand’s Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie are in second with 48 points but even if they win the medal race, which is contested by the top 10, they will get two points, meaning Mills and Clark can finish last and still take gold. It will raise GB’s tally to three with windsurfer Nick Dempsey taking silver in the RS:X.

It was a less happy day for other Brit sailors. World champions Nick Thompson and Alison Young finished sixth and eighth in the Laser and the Laser Radial respectively.

Thompson, 30, who has won the last two world titles in the lightweight dinghy, said he would not rush any decisions on his future. “I came here with bigger expectations, I was certainly looking to medal and trying to fight it out for the win but I never really got into the regatta,” he said.

“I just wasn’t on fire. Coming into this event I always knew that if I was going to have a chance I was going to have to be 100 per cent and I just never got into that rhythm.

Bronze for our Joshua Buatsi. Mate I feel for you in the fight the referee should have clearly warned and deducted points for holding. Our Mohammad Ali had the same fate in his first round loss. It seems these officials belong in the Greco Roman wrestling arena.....But then the pro ranks are like this i.e. dirty, so some may argue the point about holding and hitting.

London light-heavyweight Joshua Buatsi will pick up a bronze medal after being outpointed by Adilbek Niyazymbetov at the Rio Olympics.

The wily Kazakh, who has two silver medals at world championships to his name by the age of 27, will now fight for the gold after using his movement and experience to send the 23-year-old Buatsi packing via a unanimous decision.

Buatsi illuminated the early part of the tournament with emphatic stoppages of Kennedy Katende and Elshod Rasulov and began brightly against Niyazymbetov with a trio of rights to the body followed by a left.



The pair then exchanged meaningful jabs with Niyazymbetov's perhaps looking the more impressive due to it being thrown off the back foot, but there was little doubt about the quality of an eye-catching left to the body that began to swing the fight his way.

The youngster renewed his efforts in the second as he surged forward again but he was struggling to deal with his opponent's use of distance; Niyazymbetov landing a cute left to the body and following it with another stiff, scoring jab shortly before needing his shoelace retied.

Buatsi's frustration was going and he began complaining about holding before the round was out - a sign that he was not enjoying the officiating, which was increasingly debatable with Niyazymbetov allowed to pot-shot off the back foot before lunging in to hold and deny Buatsi space to reply.

Our greatest gymnast ever Max Whitlock has claimed his third medal! Well done mate. He gained bronze in the
Men's Individual All-Around.


Great Britain's Max Whitlock won the bronze medal in the men's all-around gymnastics final at the Olympic Park on Wednesday.

Reigning champion Kohei Uchimura claimed a dramatic gold medal with a stunning final performance on the parallel bars to overhaul Ukraine's Oleg Verniaiev, who took silver.

Whitlock thrillingly fought off China's Chaopin Lin and Nikolai Kuksenkov of Russia to clinch his third Olympic bronze medal, after placing third in pommel and team in London.

Whitlock had opened on his favoured piece of apparatus, scoring 15.875, which despite being lower than his total in the team final on Monday, gave him a slight advantage over Uchimura.

The Australian team captain who questioned why Team GB cyclists are streaking past their rivals at Rio 2016 has insisted she did not accuse anyone of cheating.

World champion Anna Meares appeared to backtrack last night after fuelling a row over what was behind Britain’s wins by saying rivals were ‘scratching our heads’.

The thinly veiled accusations made by Australia, France and Germany threatened to overshadow Team GB’s cycling haul of six golds, four silvers and two bronzes.

Just wow, I was initially upset at our Aussie cousin for her comments, but she has taken them back and praised team GB, probably because the very close ties the two countries have (little brother), and was just upset at the time.
As for the German team what a bunch of sour grapes , and the French team isn't much better. Go ahead you two cry babies give us the reasons why you think we do well, has any athlete in team GB caught for doping? No, none at all. It's called investment and we have aimed £90 million pounds at cycling over the last four years. It has paid off handsomely.
They are probably still upset about Brexit lol. We told you not to talk our country down now eat humble pie.......
The hilarious thing is that both countries together have 58 medals, we have 50 alone.

They cant seem to come to terms With the fact that we have been beating them and leading them in medals during Olympics by far for a long while now. Lmao

Sour grapes indeed. They don't know we have been investing in improving our performance. Reason we have been among the top 4 in medals performance in thes past olympics games for a while now.
They are acting as if we have not been dominating cycling for a long time now . Lool. We have always been world leaders in indoor cycling,and to a lesser extent outdoor one as well. Our girls did it again .
We easilly dispatched New Zealand 3-0 to set up a final showdown with the NederlandNederlands on Friday for a GOLD MEDAL. Our girls remain undefeated in this olympics, they won all their matches from the group stages to the final. 7 out of 7 . well done girls.

However, Certain nations give their athletes huge cash rewards if they are successful in the Olympics but others, including Great Britain, don’t give their athletes anything.

For example Joseph Schooling became the first Singaporean to win a gold medal after his triumph in the men’s 100-metre butterfly and received an estimated bonus of £580,000 for his victory. Andy Murray on the other hand received nothing for his retaining his title in the men’s tennis.
We do things differently anyway. Plus, our athlete's mainly gain honor(they train hard and compete mainly for the love of their country and because they love the sport they do as a hobby). They also get honoured from the nation and get to sign subsequent sponsorships deals as a result.

We still have more medals hopes to come. As I said, Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark practically have the gold medal nailed to their mast in the women’s 470 sailing but have to wait for some wind to clinch it officially.

And there’s plenty to look forward to, with our 2012 gold winner Jade Jones in taekwondo competing for gold.
Plus we got Mo Farah who is favourite to clinch another gold in men's 5,000m and Nicola Adams is also favourite to retain her flyweight boxing title this weekend.

While our famous Brownlee brothers will be hoping to retain their Olympic title in the triathlon.

Our girls in hockey final as well. hopefully we get at least 4 more gold medals. we should finish in a strong top 3 which is good. Plus many of our athlete's here who surprised are still young ,so come Tokyo I believe we will perform even better.

THE British pair of Liam Heath and Jon Schofield won the silver medal in the men’s 200m kayak double.

The pair had silver snatched from their grasp at London 2012, and did the same to Lithuania’s Aurimas Lankas and Edvinas Ramanauskas this time around.

The duo won bronze at London 2012 but went one better this time around

They produced a strong finish to beat the Lithuanians by 0.03 seconds, while Saul Craviotto and Cristian Toro of Spain got the gold.

Heath said: “We gave it a bit of a lunge for the line. We hit it as hard as we can.”

And Schofield added: “It is so satisfying. This guy has been on fire in training. I don’t want to let this guy down.

The latest medal brings Team GB to 51 medals in total and keeps then second in the table with 19 golds, 20 silvers and 12 bronzes.

Team GB added more silverware to its already astonishing medal pile as the Brownlee brothers brought home a British 1-2 in the triathlon.

28-year-old Alistair repeated his London success of four years ago to claim gold, beating Jonny, 26, by six seconds.

It was an extraordinary race from the Dewsbury-born pair, showing great stamina, determination and - ultimately - speed.

South Africa's Richard Schoeman took bronze but the day belonged to the British duo in the wake of an astonishing dual display.

In the run-up to the event the brothers had claimed they preferred Rio's challenging course to the flatter London equivalent of 2012, and they hammered their way through Rio's twisting, undulating circuit.

“No disrespect, but I like the Rio course more than London," gold medal-winning Ali had said.

"Four years ago, it looked great because the crowds were vast and Hyde Park always looks nice in your holiday snaps, but the terrain was flat and, from a racing point of view, it was pretty sterile.

“We both prefer big climbs, where you can put some distance between your rivals. London was more of an event than a course, but in Rio the hills will sort out the climbers from the flat-track bullies.”

That they did, and Spaniard Mario Mola - who was expected to be one of the brothers' biggest rivals - was one of those to struggle. He and teammate Fernando Alarza emerged from the water nearly a minute behind the Brits and even despite their strength on the road struggled to haul themselves back into the medal picture.

A leading group had broken away and by the midway stage of the cycle were extending their lead, with the two Brownlees and Frenchman Vincent Luis dictating a ferocious pace up front.

Vincent has traditionally been more of a threat over the shorter form but finished second at the Rio test event to ensure he was respected by elite competition. And as soon as they left their bikes behind and began to pound the streets of Rio, the three pulled away.

While Luis' stamina began to fade at the 80-minute mark, allowing South Africa's Henri Schoeman into the picture, the Brownlees kicked on into top gear.

After lap one of four on foot they had opened up a six-second gap and it became a one-on-one slog for gold.

Four years ago it was Ali who broke away from his younger sibling, testing his ability to kick on in the searing heat and humidity of Brazil. But Jonny, as in London, simply could not respond to his brother's superior stamina and drive.

As Alistair entered the final 2500m lap, he had opened opened up a 15-second lead and he proceeded to extend it further and further until slowing as he crossed the line, eventually walking, to wait for his brother and claim an incredible 1-2.

THE COURSE

Swim 1.5km (1 lap) The swim was held on the Copacabana Beach. Athletes ran into the water from the beach to perform one out and back lap.

Bike 40km (8 laps) The cycling course was a technical twister, with sharp inclines, descents and 90-degree turns.

Run 10km (4 laps) Athletes ankled it along Avenida Atlantica in front of Copacabana Beach for a total of four out-and-back laps.
