British olympic team success and news

Do I hear a hammer incoming? Hahaha. Well done Sophie Hitchon who won bronze in the women's hammer throw. I loved it!

Sophie Hitchon became the first British woman to win an Olympic hammer medal by taking bronze, as Pole Anita Wlodarczyk set a new world record to claim gold.

Hitchon threw a new British record of 74.54m on her final attempt to climb from fifth to third.

World champion Wlodarczyk, 31, threw 82.29m to break her own world record of 81.08m, while China's Zhang Wenxiu took the silver medal with 76.75m.

"I am over the moon," said Hitchon, 25. "I can't believe it."

Burnley's Hitchon, who finished fourth at the World Championships in Beijing last year, was in the bronze-medal position until the fourth round but fifth before her final throw.

When Moldova's Zalina Marghieva and Germany's Betty Heidler failed to improve, Hitchon took full advantage.

"You never know in hammer," added Hitchon, who was a ballet dancer for 10 years until the age of 14.

"The girls are all throwing really well. I didn't expect that I would hold third, I just wanted to throw further.

"It was just incredible to see the number three there and a national record, I couldn't be happier."

Folks some that we have missed.

Jason Kenny took gold in the men's sprint final. Well done Jason, we were all concentrating on the team event, which you won gold in.

Of course in the same event our very own Callum Skinner won silver, great stuff mate! It was amazing to see the Union Jack on two place at the podium hahah.

Jason Kenny cemented his status as the chairman of the velodrome boards by winning the men’s sprint final in Rio. In an all-British affair, he needed just two of three races to beat his comparatively inexperienced friend and British team‑mate Callum Skinner to win his second gold medal of these Games. Victories do not get much more comfortable and the 28-year-old mounted the top step of an Olympic podium for the fifth time in his career. In the bronze medal match, Russia’s Denis Dmitriev saw off the Australian Matthew Glaetzer to finish third.

Forgot one of our great shooters Steven Scott, he is a good shot lol. He won bronze, lovely stuff mate!

Steven Scott has won bronze in the men's double trap shooting after beating compatriot Tim Kneale in an all-British affair.

Kneale and Scott went head to head after taking third and fourth place in the semi-final just minutes earlier.

The Team GB Olympians beat Australian James Willet in a tense play-off at the end of the semi-final to make the bronze medal match, which was also a tight game.

We have now accounted for every medal won by our countrymen and countrywomen. Please make sure we do not miss any. They are all winners, no matter which colour it is. The United Kingdom now stands at second in the medals table.

GB through to badminton semi-final
Chris Langridge and Marcus Ellis beat Japan's Hiroyuki Endo and Kenichi Hayakawa to become the first Britons to reach an Olympic badminton semi-final since Athens in 2004.

The British pair, 22nd in the world, won 21-19 21-17 and now face China's Fu Haifeng and Zhang Nan on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, GB's Rajiv Ouseph moved in to the men's singles quarter-finals.

He beat seventh seed Tommy Sugiarto 21-13 14-21 21-16 and will next play European champion Viktor Axelsen.

GB's Ouseph through to quarter-finals of men's badminton singles
Ouseph, 29, faces the Danish fourth seed, who beat Ireland's Scott Evans 21-16 21-12, on Wednesday.

Langridge and Ellis have a chance to secure Britain's first Olympic badminton medal since Nathan Robertson and Gail Emms won mixed doubles silver in Athens 12 years ago.

“This is massive for badminton,” added the 31-year-old. “We understand we’re a small sport on the global scheme of things and especially in Britain.

“People don’t know what badminton is really. We just really want people back home to play the sport and to play it in schools.

“It’s a great sport. I started 21 years ago at when my teacher was also county coach and now I’m in the semi-finals of the Olympics.”

"Our record against the Chinese pair is not as good as we would like but the thing is, this is the Olympics and anything can happen," said Langridge.

"If you had told me before the start that we would make the semi-finals I would have bitten your hand off.

"It is amazing - we are one of these pairs that are quite up and down - but this tournament we have shown our ability."

Im just amazed by the number of disciplines/fields our athletes are excelling in . Shows we are covering/performing well in basically almost every sport event as much as we can. Great going. Hopefully during the next olympics we will win even more medals and excel in even more events. :)

Do a search in the China forums for Anglo Saxon. It's their code word for the "evil white man" (mainly towards the US). They'd love to apply that to the US but only 10% of our white population is Anglo-Saxon...so it's a bit silly. However ...it certainly applies far more to the UK...so good going Anglo-Saxons!
