British olympic team success and news

Yes, we're coming for the USA, you know revenge for the independence war and that. 8-)

G'day Mate

Team GB have a long history on getting gold in cycling event, and they are just starting to kick off yesterday, and this year our challenger seems a bit weak at this, Anna Mears only finished third and our female team finished fifth, so I would have expected a large haul for team GB from the cycling event this couple of days.

On the other hand, Team USA is still going strong with athletics, both tracks and fields event, they are expected to haul at least 10 gold from the 44 events. Unless the Team USA slip up or something, chances are not too well for anyone to catch up on Team USA tally.

We have stopped generating medal, any thing from now on is considered a bonus.

Andy Murray can't hold back the tears after winning gold in Rio 2016 Olympics tennis final
07:47, 15 AUG 2016 UPDATED 07:49, 15 AUG 2016 BY THOMAS BRISTOW

It all got a bit too much for the Team GB athlete after he put in a colossal effort against Juan Martin Del Potro

Team GB hero Andy Murray couldn't hold back the tears after he beat Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro in the Rio 2016 Olympics men's singles tennis final to claim gold.

The Scot now becomes the first tennis player in history to win two Olympic singles titles.

As seen in the video above, following match point, a tired Murray immediately gets overwhelmed - and his eyes well up as he struggles to contain the emotion surrounding the spectacle.

Murray won the four hour final 7-5 4-6 6-2 7-5.

Speaking to the BBC after the match, Murray said: "To defend the singles title... I think Venus and Serena (Williams) have won about four each but haven't defended a singles title before.

"It's obviously not an easy thing to do. I had to fight unbelievably hard tonight to get it."

Asked whether he will attempt to make it a treble of successes in Tokyo in 2020, the 29-year-old responded: "Four years is a long time and so many things can change. A lot has changed since 2012, I'm happy here competing for the biggest events.

"Who knows about Tokyo in four years. At 33, I'm not sure I'll be at the same level."

"I'll enjoy this one for the next couple of days but I'm supposed to be playing a match on Wednesday in Cincinnatti," Murray added.

"I'll try and get there as early as I can and hopefully recover a little bit over the next couple of days."

Takinga closer look at Britain's remaining medal hopes this coming few days.

August 16

Britain could claim three medals on the final day of action at the velodrome, with the omnium (Laura Trott) , men's Keirin ( Jason Kenny ) and women's sprint ( Becky James ) all coming to a conclusion.

In boxing, defending champion Nicola Adams will expect to have reached the quarter-finals in the women's flyweight division as she looks to become the first Briton to retain an Olympic title.

Will Nicola Adams repeat her 2012 heroics?

British super-heavyweight Joe Joyce is through to the quarter-finals of the boxing, after a first-round stoppage win over Cape Verde's Davilson Dos Santos Morais.

In the women's hockey, unbeaten GB defeated USA 2-1 to top their group and will play their quarter-final match on Monday.

At the Aquatics Centre, Grace Reid made the final of the women's three-metre springboard diving after finishing 11th in the semi-final.

August 17

Britain's Shara Proctor should be a strong contender for a medal in the women's long jump final, while team-mate Tiffany Porter will have similar aspirations in the 100m hurdles.

The showjumping team medals are decided, with Great Britain defending the title won after a dramatic jump-off against Holland in London four years ago.

The taekwondo gets under way with Britain's Jade Jones out to defend her title in the 57kg category.

August 18

The Brownlee brothers will carry Britain's hopes in the triathlon with Alistair defending his title and Jonny also expected to do battle for a place on the podium.

Injury permitting, Bolt will be a massive favourite to win the men's 200m, where Britain's Adam Gemili will look to give the Jamaican a real run for his money.

Former world champion Liam Phillips will hope to contest the BMX final and erase the memories of crashing at the same stage in London 2012.

The lightweight final in the women's boxing competition takes place, with Ireland's Katie Taylor the defending champion.

A busy day sees the medals decided in the women's golf event and the athletics programme also come to an end.

Farah will race for what he hopes to be a second gold of the Games in the 5,000m, while South Africa's Caster Semenya is shaping up to be a big favourite in the women's 800m. The last action sees the fast and furious 4x400m relays for men and women.

Away from the track, Britain's Non Stanford , Helen Jenkins and Vicky Holland will contest the women's triathlon, while diver Tom Daley faces the semi-finals and final of the men's 10m platform in his bid to improve upon a bronze at London 2012.

Nice breakdown mate, but my post was really in jest. The US is a nation of 300 million plus, but I'm pretty sure per capita we will be the most successful nation on the planet, and we are second.....We have plenty of to come yet, including a possible there podium finishes in the boxing. By the way I love cheering Aussie athletes as our very own.

Now back to business.
Oh did we come through again!

Well done Jason Kenny for gold in the men's sprint final, I love the action of the sprint.

Great Britain's Jason Kenny won his fifth Olympic gold medal by beating compatriot Callum Skinner in the men's sprint final at Rio 2016.

Kenny, champion at London 2012, came out on top in the first two races to win the best-of-three final.

Russian Denis Dmitriev beat Australia's Matthew Glaetzer to take bronze.

"It is special, really special," said Kenny, who has now won as many Olympic golds as rower Sir Steve Redgrave and fellow cyclist Sir Bradley Wiggins.

Only Sir Chris Hoy, also a cyclist, has won more but Kenny, 28, can equal his mark when he races in the keirin on Tuesday.

"I'm really grateful," he told BBC Sport. "When we win, it feels like the team is winning and we have everyone behind us, pushing us."

Oh I missed our Greg. Good stuff mate getting the bronze in the long-jump.

After being out of the medal with one attempt left, GB's Greg Rutherford jumps an impressive 8.29m to take bronze whilst USA's Jeff Henderson and South Africa's Luvo Manyonga take gold and silver

David Florence and Richard Hounslow won silver in the double slalom, well done lads, making us all proud.

‘You are out there working hard and pushing hard. That’s what David is so good at. He is focused, he is so powerful and strong. I can just make sure we are controlled at the back and keep us going in the right direction. Top to bottom it was a good run. Maybe not perfect. We were so close to gold, but it was also so close to it not being a medal. Fantastic, delighted.’

Florence, a mathematical physics graduate, applied to be an astronaut but did not make it into the final run-off. He is a popular member of the British team and came close to carrying the British flag at the opening ceremony.

‘I’m not disappointed at all,’ said Scotsman Florence, 34, who has been speaking to local journalists here in Portuguese. ‘I love this sport and I’d love to win a gold medal.’

Well done Becky, Rebecca James wins silver in the women's sprint.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/wales/37079427

Wales' Becky James set a new Olympic record of 10.721 seconds to qualify fastest for the women's track sprint elimination races in Rio.

The 24-year-old won keirin silver with a powerful surge a day earlier.

That talent was again in evidence as James beat the mark of Britain's London 2012 silver medallist Victoria Pendleton in her first race of Sunday.

James then comfortably won her last-16 race to reach Monday's quarter-finals which start at 14:00 BST.

Bro, our very own mark Cavendish who won many tour de France and world outdoor cycling events finally got an Olympic medal, the only thing he had not won in his incredible career. Well done Cavendish for coming second with a silver medal eventhoughyou could have got gold I believe. The gold went to Italy's Viviani, congrats @MarkusS . You are 5th in the medal tables which is really great and commendable ahead of France and Germany. Impressive so far.

Rio Olympics 2016: Mark Cavendish wins silver medal in men's omnium

Great Britain's world champion Mark Cavendish won his first Olympic medal at the third attempt after finishing second in the men's omnium.

Cavendish, 31, came ninth in the Madison with Bradley Wiggins in 2008 before a disappointing 29th place finish in the 2012 road race.

He had been in second place going into the points race and he held off the challenge of Denmark's Lasse Hansen.

Italy's Elia Viviani won gold with 207 points overall.

Don't forget that we got a very good opportunity to win three goods in cycling indoor event tomorrow. With Olympic and world champion sir Jason Kenny(who is favourite to bag yet another gold after the 2 he already got). While Laura trott(defending her Olympic title ) is already leading by 10points going into the final tomorrow. I'm 100℅ sure she will retain her title since watching her impressive show of force today shows she has no real challenger.
