Team GB added more silverware to its already astonishing medal pile as the Brownlee brothers brought home a British 1-2 in the triathlon.

28-year-old Alistair repeated his London success of four years ago to claim gold, beating Jonny, 26, by six seconds.

It was an extraordinary race from the Dewsbury-born pair, showing great stamina, determination and - ultimately - speed.

South Africa's Richard Schoeman took bronze but the day belonged to the British duo in the wake of an astonishing dual display.

After both managing to stay in the ten-strong leading pack during swim, defending champion Alistair was fourth out of the water while little bro Jonny was two places back when it came to mounting their bikes.

Their training partner Richard Varga of Slovakia returned to shore in the lead, but it wasn't long before the Yorkshire Tykes had reeled him in and Jonny Brownlee led for much of the road course's eight laps on two wheels.

In the run-up to the event the brothers had claimed they preferred Rio's challenging course to the flatter London equivalent of 2012, and they hammered their way through Rio's twisting, undulating circuit.

“No disrespect, but I like the Rio course more than London," gold medal-winning Ali had said.

"Four years ago, it looked great because the crowds were vast and Hyde Park always looks nice in your holiday snaps, but the terrain was flat and, from a racing point of view, it was pretty sterile.

“We both prefer big climbs, where you can put some distance between your rivals. London was more of an event than a course, but in Rio the hills will sort out the climbers from the flat-track bullies.”

That they did, and Spaniard Mario Mola - who was expected to be one of the brothers' biggest rivals - was one of those to struggle. He and teammate Fernando Alarza emerged from the water nearly a minute behind the Brits and even despite their strength on the road struggled to haul themselves back into the medal picture.

A leading group had broken away and by the midway stage of the cycle were extending their lead, with the two Brownlees and Frenchman Vincent Luis dictating a ferocious pace up front.

Vincent has traditionally been more of a threat over the shorter form but finished second at the Rio test event to ensure he was respected by elite competition. And as soon as they left their bikes behind and began to pound the streets of Rio, the three pulled away.

While Luis' stamina began to fade at the 80-minute mark, allowing South Africa's Henri Schoeman into the picture, the Brownlees kicked on into top gear.

After lap one of four on foot they had opened up a six-second gap and it became a one-on-one slog for gold.

Four years ago it was Ali who broke away from his younger sibling, testing his ability to kick on in the searing heat and humidity of Brazil. But Jonny, as in London, simply could not respond to his brother's superior stamina and drive.

As Alistair entered the final 2500m lap, he had opened opened up a 15-second lead and he proceeded to extend it further and further until slowing as he crossed the line, eventually walking, to wait for his brother and claim an incredible 1-2.

THE COURSE

Swim 1.5km (1 lap) The swim was held on the Copacabana Beach. Athletes ran into the water from the beach to perform one out and back lap.

Bike 40km (8 laps) The cycling course was a technical twister, with sharp inclines, descents and 90-degree turns.

Run 10km (4 laps) Athletes ankled it along Avenida Atlantica in front of Copacabana Beach for a total of four out-and-back laps.

So it's a clean 1-2 sweep for our famous brownlee brothers as I expected. Well done. Keep the medals coming. :bunny:

Oh man, that was so epic on so many levels. I'm watching the medal ceremony just to see our flag fly over two podiums.
All on the count 1, 2 and 3,

For God! For Queen! For country!

Britain's Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark win 470 sailing gold

21 gold

Japan is threatening Russia. They might sneak up to 5th if Russia isn't careful.
Germany has already overtaken Russia.
France is just ahead of Italy by silver medals(they have same number of gold.).
The battle for 2nd place will be epic, as we can't say as of yet if we will remain 2nd or if China will edge us slightly at the end of the day. we just need to match them in gold to keep our 2nd place, since we got far more silver medals.
Interesting olympics. :)

Our boys and girls keep surprising the world, this time in Badminton where we beat powerhouse China who are rank world number 5. Keep the medals coming boys.:)

Badminton - Britain defeat China to take surprise bronze

By Ian Ransom | RIO DE JANEIRO
(Reuters) - Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge capped a brilliant tournament for Britain by stunning China's Chai Biao and Hong Wei to clinch the men's doubles bronze at the Olympics on Thursday.

The rank outsiders were thrilled to have just made the knockout rounds but showed they belonged at the business end of the tournament with a composed 21-18 19-21 21-10 victory at the Riocentro.

Charging away in the decisive game, the world number 22 pair ruled the back of the court, repeatedly smashing through the Chinese defences to grab Team GB's first badminton medal since Gail Emms and Nathan Robertson took mixed doubles silver at the 2004 Athens Games.

"It’s been a surreal week," said an elated Ellis, who slumped to the court and rolled around after winning match point.

"We weren’t expected to get a medal. Coming here performing the way we have, beating the pairs we have is amazing.

"I don’t think we’ve performed like that ever," added the 26-year-old from Huddersfield.

"So to do it on the very biggest stage, the pinnacle of our careers, it is amazing.

"And I’m so happy we’ve managed to do it together because we have had some ups and downs."

The pair had never won a trophy of any global significance but floored the third-ranked South Koreans Kim Gi-jung and Kim Sa-rang during the pool rounds before dumping Japan's eighth-ranked pair to reach the semi-finals.

The 31-year-old Langridge was overwhelmed and felt rewarded for years of hard graft and the nights where he lay "dying" on the sofa after hard training sessions.

"It is all worth it when you win a medal," he said.

"I'm just like -- I'm probably not going to take the medal off. I'm going to wear it every day."

@Blue Marlin @mike2000 is back @waz will we be able to better our London tally ?

Hmmmm....... Not sure bro. We won 65 medals with 29 golds in London 2012 coming a strong 3rd. I think we will get about 60medals this time with about 24 of them gold hopefully. which isn't bad to be honest.:)

Our reigning Olympic champion Nicola Adams advanced into final by beating China's cancan ren. She will be favourite to win yet another gold medal and defend her title she won Iondon 4 ears ago. Congrats iron lady. :)

Nicola Adams is now one win away from more Olympic Glory

Nicola Adams is one win away from retaining her Olympic gold medal after out-classing Cancan Ren to book a place in Saturday's Women's Flyweight final.

She will take on Sarah Ourahmoune from France who edged out Ingrit Valencia Victoria of Columbia in the second semi-final at Riocentra Pavilion 6 and with fellow reigning OIympic champion Anthony Joshua watching on, she is already in the mood to hold on to her title.

"Another gold medal fight, I am excited and I can't wait," she told the BBC. "This is what I have been training for for the last four years and I am ready to go."

"Four years is a long time for someone to change their style and strength and weaknesses, so I just had to take it for what it was - going in there and stick to the tactics."

The Leeds golden girl won a unanimous decision against the Chinese rival she beat back in London 2012 to become the first ever female to win a medal at the Olympics.

Adams won three out of the four rounds to secure a unanimous decision success - 39-37, 39-37, 39-37 - that leaves her as the first Team GB boxer to reach a final in Rio.

Nicola Adams (L) saw her jab do most of the damage to Cancan Ren's semi-final chances
Adams was the first to land a shot with two crisp jabs but with her old foe happy to stay out of range and sit back and counter, it was a close and at times, cautious start.

The Team GB star was keen to claim that first round but she was soon stretching in, missing with her shots and then being caught by Cancan's clever counters.
nicola-adams-cancan-ren-adams-rio-2016_3767482.jpg

The right from Nicola Adams saw the momentum shift in the second round

Adams seemed to know things hadn't gone her way and with her 3-2 down in the last five fights between them, she came out in fantastic fashion for the second.

The opening foray saw a right hook hit home and instantly the jab slipped and stayed in gear, continually catching the Chinese fighter.

cancan-ren-nicola-adams-rio-2016_3767484.jpg

Old foe Cancan Ren caused Nicola Adams a few problems but not enough to reach the final

Another big right closed the round and with the referee warning Cancan for holding on whenever Adams moved right in, the balance of power has shifted straight into the reigning Olympic champions lap.

The third round saw her stamp her superiority all over it, as she managed to avoid the opening attack and as her jab and a straight right connecting cleanly, her 30-year-old opponent seemed to tire.

Cancan went for it from the start of the fourth and final round but even when roles were reversed and Adams was sitting back and countering, a couple of clever rights and her defensive skills showed Rio why she is still the reigning champion.

As I expected our Adam advanced to the final and I expect her to win yet another gold for GREAT BRITAIN:)

Britain's Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark win 470 sailing gold

21 gold

Come on bro you know the drill, pictures and info please!

Well done Saskia (lovely name) and Hannah, you guys smashed it. Much love girls. Our NZ kin came in second as well, congratulations to them.

Great Britain's Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark have won gold in the women's 470 sailing event at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The pair, silver medallists at the 2012 Olympics in London, only needed to finish the medal race on Thursday to win gold, and came in eighth.

New Zealand's Jo Aleh and Polly Powrie won silver and Camille Lecointre and Helene Defrance of France took bronze.

Britain have now won 21 gold medals in Rio, and a second in sailing after Giles Scott's win in the men's Finn.

Wales' Mills, 28, and 36-year-old Clark, who comes from Essex, held a 20-point lead going into the medal race after winning three times and never finishing below eighth in the 10 races in the first series.

The medal race had been scheduled to take place on Wednesday, but had been postponed until Thursday because of a lack of wind.

Only a disqualification or technical problem could have denied Mills and Clark, fourth in the world rankings, and they stayed out of trouble as they were eighth out of 10.

Slovenia won the final race but it was not enough to earn them a medal. The United States were in the bronze-medal position until a late mistake dropped them down to last place in the medal race, and seventh overall.

We still have more gold medal hopes to come.
From Mo Farah who is favourite to win the 5000m, Nicola Adams favourite to retain her Olympic boxing title in the final tomorrow, our hockey girls facing the Nederland's in a thrilling final tomorrow, and 6ft 6 tall Joe Joyce is also vying for gold in his semi final heavyweight boxing match and James Cooke in pentathlon . :) So fingers crossed we could finish with 25 gold medals.
