Dinorwig Power Station, otherwise known as Electric Mountain, is a pumped-storage hydro station in Llanberis, Wales. And yes: it's Britain's largest battery. Here's how it works, and why some of the things you think you know about TV pickups might not be so true any more.

Well. that's basically how dams work.

Are the Welsh getting any benefit from it or the English are sticking it to them as usual ?

Nothing new... it happens all over Europe. They build turbines (small power stations) on rivers at every opportune place, where there's a difference in surface level.
In times of high energy demand they let the water flow through turbines and in low energy demand they either let the water flow through gate ways or pump it back to higher level.
What's special in Dinorwig Power Station is the volume of water and size of turbine, which is indeed an impressive piece of engineering.
What he didn't mention, how same turbine become a pump because the in case of pumping changing direction of rotation is not enough, the direction of blades also needed to be changed.
I don't know the details... may be they have one motor turbine and one generator turbine.
