It's just a figurative expression, basically Britain is sliding downwards towards irrelevance. Which it is.What's with "sliding into the Atlantic"? What does it mean?
Mainland Chinese cities nowadays are qualitatively more aesthetically beautiful and better planned than Hong Kong.in the nineties i used to visit Hong Kong frequently.
i have been to Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Hangzhou (what a beautiful city) during previous two decade.
they have been changed massively, developed & modernized. i have seen Shanghai skyline rising over two decades.
Mainland Chinese cities nowadays are qualitatively more aesthetically beautiful and better planned than Hong Kong.
What does Britain even produce nowadays except for the same scammy wall street financial products made in the City of London?
Most of Britain's cities nowadays are bleak and run down compared to China's shining metropolises and advanced infrastructure, that's an undeniable fact.
I even dread living in London, the best Britain has to offer. it is congested, dirty and lack amenities. Driving here is a nightmare, parking is a nightmare. The started tfl to better the infrastructure of the city. The takes billions out of the pockets of Londoners every year. But nothing has changed much. Apart from cosmetic changes by painting cycle lanes and restricting cars where ever is possible they do nothing at all. In my area, they have blocked so many streets with huge flower pots at the entrances to make them on way, thus thwarting the flow of the traffic. They are gradually closing all the streets, which provides any kind of short cuts to avoid jam roads. By putting the whole traffic on already congested roads what you will achieve apart from more pollution!!
The planners here are whacky, I always pinpoint to my wife what streets are on their target next, and voila, within months or a year, those streets are blocked. My wife laughs, and i fume to see my tax sterling spent on shit schemes.
The recent innovation is to put plastic sticks to separate cycle lanes from the main traffic.
What those sticks have done, have blocked all the parking on the road, including delivery parking and access. whole length of roads in suburbia are now economically damage, shop keepers crying m because customer's traffic is dying down, nobody can park the cars, so now they go to bigger store where car parks are available, the small business had it.
Daft idiots.
Are you talking about the center of London? Maybe this will reflect poorly on American cities, but when I was in London, I was actually amazed at how much cleaner, safer and more upkept it was compared to big American cities.
The more suburban areas of London looked positively depressing though with the row houses and what not.
It's because the UK doesn't have a proper property tax due to it being still somewhat a feudal system.
This makes it have the horrendous properties of the Californian and Chinese property markets.
Pretty much the only economic activity in the U.K. is every form of rent seeking feudal style scheme.
