Britain announces major defence review to focus on Russia and IS terrorism - watch on - uatoday.tv
20,000 British troops could stay in Germany to deter Russian aggression
British Prime Minister David Cameron says threats from Russia and Islamic State terrorism would be the focus for a major UK strategic defence review.
In a speech to servicemen and women, the prime minister promised to invest in equipment and special forces to combat threats to Britain and her allies.
Cameron's remarks came as the UK was beleived to be considering a U-turn on a policy to bring 20,000 British troops home from Germany by 2020.
British forces have been based in Germany since the end of the Second World War but the decision to bring the troops home is likely to be shelved as Britain prepares to confront renewed Russian aggression.
David Cameron: ''This is the threat of our generation. The battle of our generation. The fight we are going to have and I'm absolutely determined, that the RAF, the army, the navy, will have the equipment, the means, the resources to deal with this. One of the things that will mean is making sure we will have the drones, the spy planes, the special forces, the unique capabilities that make sure we can deal with this threat at its source.''
The UK government said last week it would meet NATO's defence spending pledge of two percent of gross domestic product (GDP) for the next five years, which would boost budgets to 47.7 billion pounds (USD 74 billion) a year by 2020.
Britain's defence chiefs will conclude the UK security review later this year.
