Brigadier Mohammad Usman was the highest rank officer of Indian Army killed in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, who as a Muslim became a 'Symbol of India's Inclusive Secularism'. At the time of partition of India he with many other officers declined to move to the Pakistan Army and continued to serve the Indian Army.[2] He died in July 1948 while fighting the raiders in Jammu and Kashmir.

At the time of Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-48 Brigadier Usman was posted at the Jammu and Kashmir front as the brigade commander of the 50 Para Brigade. He led his soldiers from front and in January–February 1948 repulsed a fierce attack on Nowshera and Jhangar, two highly strategic locations in Jammu and Kashmir. He was thence known as the Lion of Naoshera. However, he was killed in action while fighting the Pakistan Army and the tribal raiders on July 3 of that year.

An Indian journalist, Khwaja Ahmad Abbas, wrote about his death, "a precious life, of imagination and unswerving patriotism, has fallen a victim to communal fanaticism. Brigadier Usman's brave example will be an abiding source of inspiration for Free India".[4] Brigadier Usman was awarded the Indian military honour Mahavir Chakra posthumously.

It takes people of all faiths to fight small mindeness, intolerance and hatred born in the ideas of religious supremacism of some.

That battle is still on, Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain merely the latest face, but we are 1200 million strong here. Do not owe explanations on our secularism to people who do not understand the L of secularism ;)

Bit rich coming from a country that has had a religiously minded political party (BJP-RSS)in power on a few occasions.

Dont claim to be secular or neither hold the secular ideology as some sort of bench mark on how "advanced" or "civilized" a nation or peoples are.

Very funny that is coming from a country that has almost cleansed minorities, institutionalized blasphemy law, text books teaches to hate minorities, minorities labeled as 'kafir', conversion is a proud and daily routine. How you talk?

Havildar Abdul Hamid

Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid (July 1, 1933 – September 10, 1965) was a soldier in the 4 Grenadiers, Indian Army, who died in the Khem Karan sector during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, and was the posthumous recipient of the Republic of India's highest military decoration, the Param Vir Chakra.

At 0800 hours on 10 September 1965 Pakistan forces launched an attack with a regiment of Patton tanks on a vital area ahead of village Cheema on the Bhikkiwind road in the Khem Karam Sector. Intense artillery shelling preceded the attack. The enemy tanks penetrated the forward position by 0900 hours. Realising the grave situation, Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid who was commander of an RCL gun detachment moved out to a flanking position with his gun mounted on a jeep, under intense enemy shelling and tank fire. Taking an advantageous position, he knocked out the leading enemy tank and then swiftly changing his position, he sent another tank up in flames. By this time the enemy tanks in the area spotted him and brought his jeep under concentrated machine-gun and high explosive fire. Undeterred, Company Quarter Master Havildar Abdul Hamid kept on firing on yet another enemy tank with his recoilless gun. While doing so, he was mortally wounded by an enemy high explosive shell.

Havildar Abdul Hamid’s brave action inspired his comrades to put up a gallant fight and to beat back the heavy tank assault by the enemy. His complete disregard for his personal safety during the operation and his sustained acts of bravery in the face of constant enemy fire were a shining example not only to his unit but also to the whole division and were in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.

Subject brigadier was first victim of being shot at back by his comrades.

In Kargil war dalit soldiers & Kashmiris were used as human shield.

I don't think anyone's buying that. Without proof claiming this controversial is not a good idea.
