WASHINGTON – The United States and its allies are considering a joint boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, the State Department said Tuesday.

“It [a joint boycott] is something that we certainly wish to discuss,” State spokesman Ned Price told reporters when asked about the Biden administration’s plans ahead of the international games.

“A coordinated approach will not only be in our interest but also in the interest of our allies and partners,” he added.

Price said that the United States has not yet made a decision but was concerned about China’s egregious human rights abuses. The Olympic Games are due to take place between Feb. 4 to Feb. 20.

The potential diplomatic boycott of the Olympic Games comes as the Biden administration works to rally allies to mount international pushback on China.

Last month, the United States sanctioned two Chinese officials, citing their roles in serious human rights abuses against ethnic minorities in Xinjiang. The sanctions by the Biden administration complement actions also taken by the European Union, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Beijing has previously rejected U.S. charges that it has committed genocide against the Uyghurs, a Muslim population indigenous to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region in Northwest China. The foreign ministry called such claims “malicious lies” designed to “smear China” and “frustrate China’s development.”

The sanctions came on the heels of a contentious meeting between Secretary of State Antony Blinken and national security advisor Jake Sullivan and China’s top diplomat, Yang Jiechi, and State Councilor Wang Yi in Alaska.

Ahead of the Alaska talks, Blinken slammed China’s sweeping use of “coercion and aggression” on the international stage and warned that the U.S. will push back if necessary.

“China uses coercion and aggression to systematically erode autonomy in Hong Kong, undercut democracy in Taiwan, abuse human rights in Xinjiang and Tibet, and assert maritime claims in the South China Sea that violate international law,” Blinken said at a news conference in Japan.

Biden, who spoke to Chinese President Xi Jinping in February, has previously said that his approach to China would be different from his predecessor’s in that he would work more closely with allies in order to mount pushback against Beijing.

“We will confront China’s economic abuses,” Biden said in a speech at the State Department, describing Beijing as America’s “most serious competitor.”

“But we’re also ready to work with Beijing when it’s in America’s interest to do so. We’ll compete from a position of strength by building back better at home and working with our allies and partners.”

Tensions between Beijing and Washington soared under the Trump administration, which escalated a trade war and worked to ban Chinese technology companies from doing business in the United States.

Over the past four years, the Trump administration blamed China for a wide range of grievances, including intellectual property theft, unfair trade practices and recently, the coronavirus pandemic.

Vulture s are calling for world peace.

All decent Americans opposed to this regressive, war-mongering, Cold War mindset of the US Establishment need to make their voices heard in opposing the US government once more pushing the world into chaos and confrontation for no reason.

The reason behind a boycott is important - in this case the US establishment throwing a massive, whiny tantrum for not being allowed to be the sole bully on the world stage.

When will the US have stolen enough school lunches from those weaker than itself to be satisfied and let the world function in peace?

allow me to explain it..
Had it been a high school party where just because the 'Kewl' player did not show up, leaving the host embarrassed then i would have agreed with you.....

From a geopolitical perspective, world 'used' to be Unipolar with Soviet Union at the top but following the cold war & soviet disintegration, the crown went to US. so America was the new sole power player & the world was still a Unipolar.
However we are no longer in that phase, we have already transitioned to a new era where it's a Bipolar world. US has a bloc it's own & they would all follow each other to the end of the world but then Russian & China have their own bloc.

US has been trying to maintain hegemony over the region through same old players - EU & the Brits but all those are no longer Regional Powers. UK & Canada are not even active on the diplomatic front let alone being in position to boycott China.

On the other hand Russia & China are reaching out to the regional States & forming it's own alliances. you really think it's going to matter anymore if US along with it's 'Tag along' doesn't show up to the fight?
It will enforce China's authority further into the region....

there is a limit to everything if America drags every ally with it then it might exhaust them all and there maybe no point of return and only option left will be to use its hammer which has not yielded the expected results in the past 20 years of invasion.

from a neutral point of view
I cant support bringing politics into sport. this is embarrassing.
yes confront China politically and economically and keep a military pressure but don't go so low, culture and sports were not graded into politics with even the soviets.

take it easy its just my view.

honestly I feel very embarrassed that America has to stoop to such level? it is so much ahead of China in so many ways yet it is acting like a sour loser who wants to settle a childhood score.
seems like the Hawks of the Deep state want to drum the Americans into a place where there will be no other option but to fight a war. I wonder how many of its allies will have the stamina and motivation to follow that warpath,

When was the USSR the unipolar power? At most it was always the second superpower in a bipolar world with the US being first.

I do agree with you that this is certainly very much like high school politics, in fact much of geopolitics is much the same.

With that said, not showing up to the olympics basically amounts to just throwing a tantrum. Besides wasting money hosting a half attended event, it doesn’t really hurt China in any significant way.

The US boycotted the Moscow olympics and The USSR returned the favor by boycotting the Los Angeles olympics so there is certainly a precedent.

None of them have Chinese people's big heart. China is world's oldest continuous civilization since 2,000 BC. Chinese people have been through everything. Seen everything. Americans have an ego problem. Just look at Hollywood. Nothing but childish heroism that makes no sense whatsoever. Chinese people never boycott another country's Olympics.

Not so much war itself as the threat of war, much as it was with the Soviets.

The military-industrial complex in the US gets to demand trillions more in funding for military projects & acquisitions to face a threat that the Establishment itself is creating, while Americans struggle with sky-rocketing college tuition and healthcare costs.
