What Benifit it will bring to tejas over conventional Rodom?

Good to see that LSP-3 is flying with new nose.

But the question still remains, WHAT THE HELL IS LSP-2 DOING?

Calm down bro.. plz control your emotions:-):-)... LSP3 Flew a long back in 2010. Quote from Tejas's official website:
2010
  • 6th June - TD-2 made her successful maiden flight.
  • 23rd April - LCA Tejas LSP-3 made maiden flight. LSP-3 is close to the final configuration including the new air-data computers.
  • Multi Mode Radar, new communication and navigation equipment and radar warning receiver. With this the LCA programme has completed 1350 test flights logging about 800 flying hours.
  • 2nd June - First Flight of LCA Tejas LSP-4. Flight. In addition to the LSP-3 standard of preparation, the aircraft also flew with the Countermeasure Dispensing System.
  • 19 November - First Flight of LCA Tejas LSP-5.

We all are eagerly waiting for SP2. LSP2 Flew way back in 2008 (16th June to be precise :-))

I'm confused now... its LSP3 or SP3 ?? or they both same??

This was LSP 3. This was the plane first fitted with the radar for testing. Hence, I assume they decided to test the dome on this. SP 2 is the 2nd in a series of SP 1 to SP 20. These will be Mk I. SP 1 has been delivered. SP 2 is next to be delivered, hence the excitement. The rest, after SP 20, will be Mk IA.

Sp2 will be delayed , until cobham radome successfully fits with lsp3 ?
It shouldn't be, as its IOC2 standards.

But hey its already delayed by a year.

All hail the " 0.5" Production rate of HAL.

No of LCA in IAF => 1
No of J20 in PLAAF=> 2

Lessons to be learnt here.

Tejas LSP-3 flies with new 'Cobham Quartz Radome'

Bengaluru: India's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas achieved yet another milestone ahead of the Final Operational Clearance (FOC) on Wednesday.

Sources confirmed to Mathrubhumi on Thursday that the Limited Series Production (LSP-3) variant of Tejas had its first flight fitted with the new quartz radome from Cobham.

The flight was piloted by Group Capt Rangachari, a Test Pilot with National Flight Test Centre, Bengaluru. During a recent visit to the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) Tejas Division in Bengaluru, Mathrubhumi had witnessed the last-minute preparations being undertaken on the LSP-3 fitted with the new radome.

The young team of engineers and technicians from the Tejas Division were seen working on the aircraft for its significant mission.

As reported in these columns earlier, the Cobham radome was delivered to HAL-ADA team in August 2015. The project had delayed owing to the delay in receiving the radome along with some of the other systems.

Sources say that the initial couple of flights of LSP-3 might not test the full range of the radome. LSP-3 has been flying as part of the Tejas flightline for the last six years. It had its first flight on April 30, 2010, piloted by Wg Cdr G Thomas of NFTC.

"The test points and other parameters of the radome will be tested in future flights. When any new equipment is fitted to a fighter platform after a long AOG (Aircraft on Ground) status, first priority is always given to check the general behaviour of the aircraft" says an official.

Dr K Tamil Mani, Director-General (Aeronautical Systems), Defence Research and Development Organisation had told this correspondent in an earlier interview last year that the quartz radome would increase the radar range from the current 45-50 km to 80 km and above.

Post Bahrain air show, Team Tejas at HAL has been on their toes ensuring the aircraft variants are made available for various missions.
