ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday expressed satisfaction over Pakistan improving its position on the World Bank of Ease of Doing Business (EODB) ranking by 28 notches, saying that the country, by the end of 2020, would become one of the top destinations for investment.

“Another of our manifesto commitments fulfilled, this time on Ease Of Doing Business. Pakistan achieves the biggest improvement in its history in World Bank’s EODB rankings,” the prime minister said in a tweet after the report was released by the bank, lauding improvements in regulatory frameworks.

The prime minister said over the last decade Pakistan’s ranking had slipped more than 50 places and now had improved 28 places, from 136 to 108.

“I want to congratulate all the people in our government who worked hard to make this happen,” he said and stressed that there was still a long way to go.

The World Bank acknowledged Pakistan’s efforts in carrying out reforms in six areas which led the country to jump from last year’s 136th spot to 108 in this year’s ‘Ease of Doing Business 2020’ report.

The WB also listed Pakistan among the top ten improvers along with Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Togo, Bahrain, Tajikistan, Kuwait, China, India, and Nigeria.

The report lauded the country for following an ‘ambitious reform strategy’, and for setting up a national secretariat and a Prime Minister’s reform steering committee which has been following up on the program.

The report focused on two major cities, Karachi and Lahore, and acknowledged the various reforms taken by the government in those cities.

ISLAMABAD – The World Bank has given Pakistan the status of ‘Top Reformer’ in South Asia for introducing reforms to improve the business-doing atmosphere in the country.

Pakistan’s ranking has improved for the first time in the last fifteen years in ‘Ease of Doing Business Index’ and now the country stands at 136th rank.

According to the WB, “Pakistan improved in six areas measured by Doing Business—starting a business, dealing with construction permits, getting electricity, registering property, paying taxes and trading across borders—reflecting the country’s development of an ambitious reform strategy including the establishment of the national secretariat and Prime Minister’s reform steering committee”.

Pakistan made starting a business easier by expanding procedures available through the online one-stop shop, the global body acknowledged.

“In addition to improvements in property registration, obtaining a construction permit became easier after the Sindh Building and Control Authority and the Lahore Development Authority streamlined approval workflows and improved the operational efficiency of their one-stop shops,” read the statement issued by the World Bank.

The launching of online portals for new commercial connections made getting electricity easier, and tariff changes are announced in advance.

Moreover, tax compliance became easier through online payment modules for value added tax and corporate income tax, and a lower corporate income tax rate.

Pakistan made trading across borders easier by enhancing the integration of various agencies into an electronic system and by improving coordination of joint physical inspections at the port, concluded the WB.

One can see from the graph it was fine till 2011, rank hovering from 70ish to 80ish. I wonder wtf PMLN gov did specifically to take it from 80ish to 140+

To be fair, a lot more countries were added to the ranking around that time iirc. So if you ranked say 80/100....you could see you rank "drop" to 140/180 etc. Someone should rather do percentile analysis for that to be more apples-apples.

All said and done, its a good movement for Pakistan here....and let us see how the next few years go too, because lot of it is also consolidating and defending the hard fought gains in the processes being measured here in bureaucracy/institutions.

India was already ranked 77 so quite pointless bragging.

I do remember that to be the case with GHI(hunger index), didn't knew they did the same for this ranking too.

true.

Clearly Pakistan's economic performance is inversely proportional to Nawaz Sharif's platelet count..
Lolllll

That's why I accessed all the previous reports and wrote:

Pakistan dropped from the rank of 74 (out of 181 countries) in 2008 to 147 (out of 190) in 2018.

Yup you were more or less correct, as paksword just posted now (I assumed wrong on it).

That is indeed a pretty drastic fall during the earlier years. So its very good that IK admin is making good progress now on this, and hopefully it continues.
