'Leak risk after explosion at French nuclear plant'
Breaking news

There is a risk of a radioactive leak after a blast at the southern French nuclear plant of Marcoule, media reports say.

One person was killed and three were injured in the explosion, following a fire in a storage site for radioactive waste, Le Figaro newspaper said.

The plant is in the Gard region.

It is a major site involved with the decommissioning of nuclear facilities, and operates a pressurised water reactor used to produce tritium.

The accident happened at the Centraco nuclear waste treatment center, which belongs to Socodei, a subsidiary of the energy giant EDF.

No extra measures to prevent a leak of radioactive material were put in place in the surrounding area, the report said, although a security perimeter was set up around the site.

Marcoule, in the southern Gard region, is a major nuclear site. Its three nuclear reactors have been decommissioned, but it is now a base for reprocessing nuclear waste.

The site is partly used by French nuclear giant Areva to produce MOX fuel which recycles plutonium from nuclear weapons, AFP reported.

One person was killed in an explosion at the nuclear site of Marcoule in southern France, France's ASN nuclear watchdog said on Monday, but there was no leak of radioactive material.

Marcoule is a nuclear waste management site that does not include any reactors. The explosion took place near a furnace, an ASN spokesperson told Reuters

RIP to the dead. Very sad incident. Marcoule is the oldest French nuclear site, I think improper safety management is the reason. Hope this will not put a roadblock on nuclear R&D and powerplants in France and around the world.

Seriously what do they feed you guys in Pakistan?

You think only the French will be affected by a Nuclear Catastrophy?

Man, sometimes I feel if you guys are from outer space or what.
