Breaking: Israeli air strikes kill 6 Palestinians in Gaza

How dare Israel prevent palestinians tunnelling into their country in order to murder civilians.

This is an outrage. The palestinians must be allowed to dig into neighbouring countries for the purposes of murder without being harassed like this.

I hope the UN is convened to give Hamas & Islamic Jihad tunnel diggers protection from the brutal Israelis.

Let me guess... you're a Morrocan jew?

Israel, Hamas exchange mortar fire across norther Gaza border

GAZA (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces fired four mortar shells at alleged Hamas military posts in the northern Gaza Strip on Thursday, following claims by the army that several shells had been fired from inside the Gaza Strip at an Israeli military post along the border.

An Israeli army spokesperson told Ma’an that “a number of mortar rounds were fired at an Israeli military post adjacent to the northern Gaza Strip,” and that no Israeli injuries were reported.

“In response...Israeli tanks and aircrafts targeted four Hamas military posts in the northern Gaza Strip,” the spokesperson said, adding that “the Israeli army holds Hamas responsible for any hostile activity perpetrated against Israel from the Gaza Strip.”

No injuries among Palestinians were reported.

Hebrew media had reported that 15 mortar shells were fired from inside Gaza at Israeli “engineering structures” working near the Gaza Strip to locate tunnels being used by fighters inside Gaza.

It's actually PIJ who retaliated to this attack. Hamas is not involved thus far. Israel has been striking Gaza persistently for past half hour-hour. No injuries or casualties reported on either side. Hamas is being targeted in the aerial strikes, however.

This will not develop into anything larger, it is a rather limited response that only caused light material damage and was intended to do so(The Palestinian retaliation). Israeli air strikes have came to an halt.

It is limited and slow bleed. More lethal then all out war. Isreali army specialized in urban insurgency, but now Palastinian learn from Syrian war.

Don't think so, nothing in common here and Syrian war. And they don't have such military might for a 'limited and slow bleed'.

There was bigger development today:

Israeli settlers open fire on Palestinian farmers, killing 1, injuring another

Nablus (Ma’an) -- A Palestinian farmer was shot dead by Israeli settlers on Thursday while he was working on his land near the village of Qusra, to the south of Nablus in the northern occupied West Bank, according to local sources.

An official who monitors settlement activity in the northern West Bank told Ma'an that Israeli settlers from the illegal Yash Kod settlement outpost raided Palestinian lands near Qusra and attacked a farmer, Mahmoud Ahmad Zaal Odeh, 48, as he was working the land.

According to locals, Odeh attempted to prevent the settlers from entering his land, at which point, the settlers opened fire on him, shooting him in the chest. He succumbed to his wounds shortly after he was shot.

Another Palestinian identified as Fayez Fathi Hasan, 47, was injured in the leg by the settlers' fire.

Locals told Ma’an that Israeli forces detained Odeh’s son and took him to the Huwwara military base nearby, and have not yet returned Odeh’s body to his family.

Shortly after the deadly attack, Israeli forces raided and surrounded the village to protect the settlers, preventing all Palestinian movement in the area.

An Israeli army spokesperson told a completely different account of the events to Ma’an, saying that “earlier this morning 20 Israeli civilians were travelling near the village of Qusra southeast of nablus,” not specifying if the settlers were on foot, or why they were on the farmlands in the first place.

“During the trip, Palestinians threw rocks at the group, and in response, one of the travellers fired towards the Palestinians, and one was injured.”

“The travelers entrenched themselves in a cave,” the spokesperson said, adding that shortly after, Israeli army troops arrived in the area to protect the settlers.

The spokesperson added that the “incident” will be investigated by the army.

IDF retaliates after mortar shells fire from Gaza

10-12 mortar shells fired by Islamic Jihad at IDF post near Gaza border, leading army to attack Hamas, Islamic Jihad military positions in two separate attacks; mortar fire, which comes shortly after false Code Red alert sounded in the region; security officials stop Ashkelon-Sderot train lines, order all southern farmers to vacate fields, suspend work on border fence.

Mortar shells were fired at an IDF outpost north of the Gaza Strip Thursday afternoon by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, prompting retaliation from the army.

The shells followed earlier gunfire aimed at the post. The 10-12 shells that were fired fell in open areas near the outpost, and no one was hurt.

Moments after the mortar fire, IDF tanks and fighter jets attacked four Hamas lookout positions near Beit Hanoun on the northeast edge of the strip, which serves as a military stronghold for Hamas and the Islamic Jihad terror group.

Later, the IAF mounted a second attack against two targets in the central Gaza Strip, which Palestinian reports said were two Islamic Jihad military posts.

The IDF said Islamic Jihad was behind the attack, which was revenge for the destruction of their border-crossing tunnel.

In the wake of the attack, IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot held a situation assessment meet with the army's top generals.

"We know exactly who shot, on a personal level, their names," said IDF Spokesman Ronen Manelis. "It's safe to assume it is the same group that is operating in an organized manner, not from the gut, but with instructions from Damascus."

He said the mortar shell fire was targeting the IDF outpost and the nearby construction work on the Gaza obstacle project, which were stopped immediately afterwards.

Security officials issued instructions to cease train operations between Ashkelon and Sderot, and farmers were ordered to vacate fields located around the Gaza region. In addition, all work on the Gaza border fence was suspended and IDF forces were ordered to leave the area.

One of the farmers evacuated from the area recounted the fire exchange.

"Five workers were working in the orchard in a plantation near the border. Suddenly there was a series of explosions, one after the other. We dropped to the ground and put our hands on our head. We thought we were being shot at," he recalled.

"The explosions lasted about five minutes. The moment they ended we picked up our tools and bolted. We were really scared. It was all very jolting."

Less than an hour earlier, Code Red rocket alerts, which turned out to be false alarms, were sounded in Sderot and Negev Regional Council.

A Palestinian was also shot dead before the Code Red alerts after a crowd of Palestinians began throwing rocks at a group of Israeli children visiting the Samaria region of the West Bank near the village of Qusra.

The incident is the latest in a number of skirmishes that have intensified tensions on the volatile border, rattling the already precarious ceasefire between Israel and the Hamas-ruled enclave.

Last month, the IDF killed several Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists when it carried out a controlled explosion of a terror tunnel that had penetrated into Israeli territory near the southern Gaza city of Khan Yunis.

Shortly after, Hamas warned that Israel’s actions had constituted a “grave escalation.”

Similarly, Islamic Jihad issued a flurry of threats of retaliatory action against Israel, prompting the IDF to upload warnings to the terror group to refrain from escalating matter and deploying Iron Dome missile-defence batteries around the region and central Israel, including Tel Aviv.

Yoav Zitun, Matan Tzuri, Elior Levy and Asaf Zagrizak contributed to this report.
