Irbil, Iraq (CNN) -- Iraq's president appointed a new prime minister on Monday, further complicating the country's intense power struggle amid a dire humanitarian crisis and a militant threat strong enough to draw U.S. air power back to the fray.

President Fuad Masum appointed Haider al-Abadi as the country's prime minister, replacing a defiant Nuri al-Maliki with a member of his own party.

It wasn't clear whether al-Maliki would peacefully relinquish power or what impact the situation would have on the country, which is already torn by a threat from Islamist militants so brutal that they crucify people and brag about it online.

Maliki had to go, hope he accepts this in favor of Iraqis. Also, I hope the new PM can get all Iraq united against IS terrorists by establishing an inclusive and strong government.

@1000 @Dizer @Malik Alashter @Alshawi1234

What's your take on the new PM?

He's going to go alright. He's going to go the Riek Machar way.

Ongoing Sudanese civil war reference.

If Maliki steps down he will get arrested, he knows this and he will not step down unless he is given 100% security guarantee for him and his family.

He's smarter then maliki, his educational background shows,

That's all i know but he's going to be prime minister of a fucked political system so.

he can take first flight to russia or USA or EU and enjoy his remain life why should he stay in this hell ?

Looks like Maliki is not happy about this, he filed a legal complaint and is mustering troops.

Good, Maliki is the worst thing to happen to Iraq since the US withdrawal.

He is gathering troops to fight the President. It is going to be a lot more interesting in Iraq pretty soon.

Iraq needs a strong military man as PM.

Interesting? No. This story has been played out many times before in different countries; the most recent example being the Ivory Coast.

What's going to happen is that Maliki is going to start a fight, and he's going to lose; right now, even the Shia are against him. His only base for support are hardcore Iraqi Shia-nationalists, who don't want any Sunni in the government and security apparatus, and their numbers are quickly dwindling.

Even Iran recognizes that Maliki can no longer be relied on to keep Iran's influence intact.

A Moderate Iraqi government is the need of the hour, Maliki antagonized KSA and GCC on behalf of Iran, if a more moderate ruler comes to power it is in everyone's benefit, that maybe since the 1940s we may have an Iraq that is on good terms with its neighbors.
