A cameraman of Interim Test
Range (ITR) at Chandipur in
Odisha’s Baleswar district has
been arrested on charges of
spying for Pakistani intelligence
agency ISI, informed Asit
Panigrahi, IG (Eastern Range),
here today.
The man, identified as Ishwar
Chandra Behera of Kantipur
village near Baisinga in
Mayurbhanj district, was
employed as a cameraperson on
contractual basis in 2007 and
had been spying for ISI for the
last 8-10 months.
Two computer hard disks, two
mobile handsets and a bank
passbook have been seized from
his possession, the IG said.
“After intelligence inputs about
his suspicious activities, we had
put him under suveillance. We
took him into custody and
interrogated him. During
interrogation, he confessed that
he had been passing on sensitive
information about missile tests
to the agent who recruited him,”
Panigrahi said.
A case has been registered under
Section 120 B (criminal
conspiracy) and 121 A (treason)
against him at the Chandipur
police station. “We will produce
him in the court and seek a 14-
day remand for further
interrogation,” he said.
Giving details of the case,
Panigrahi said Behera was in
constant touch with his handler
over phone and had met him at
least 10 times during his trips to
Kolkata.
“On perusing his bank account,
we found that money had been
transferred to his account
through internet banking from
various places including Abu
Dhabi, Mumbai, Meerut, Andhra
Pradesh and Bihar,” the IG said.
His call records are being verified,
he added.
“We are verifying of he was
acting alone or there were
others associated with him.”
Panigrahi said.
