The Brazilian Navy is planning a fleet of six nuclear and over 20 conventional submarines (15 new and five refurbished). With its torpedoes and missiles, will be the most powerful deterrent force of Latin America in terms of the Plan of Organization and Equipment of the Navy (Paemb). The goal is long term, will only be achieved in 2047. The estimated cost of each nuclear-powered submarine is 550 million euros.
The first of them, under the Program for Development of Submarines (Prosub), now underway, will cost 2 billion euros, consisting of the costs of transferring technology and other capabilities (such as the design of ships) by the French shipyard DCNS. The other units are valued only for the price of construction, at the new shipyard Itaguaí, on the southern coast of Rio de Janeiro. President Lula visits the works in December.
The industrial core will be installed next to the new base of the Submarine Force. The two projects are being executed by Odebrecht. The company will also produce submarines.
According to Admiral Julio Moura Neto, the importance of Submarine Force is desired by the Navy to defend the oil-rich pre-salt, the need for safety and the new position of Brazil in an international context. "These are factors that reinforce the need to prioritize the strategy of deterrence," he says. The information is from the newspaper "Estado de S. Paulo".
