Mohammad Adnan Hilal, a 17-year-old electronics engineering student committed suicide after being declared 'failed' in Physics, a subject his family and friends claim he had mastery over. Four months later when the paper was given for re-evaluation, it was found that he not only passed the subject but also topped his class.

Crestfallen, Mohammad, a first year student at Government Polytechnic College in Srinagar plummeted to his death by jumping into River Jhelum in June. His body was fished out four days later. As per the initial evaluation reports, Mohammed had secured a total of 28 marks in Physics. However, after the re-evaluation it was revealed that he had secured 48 marks in the subject. Thereby, scoring an aggregate of 70% in the first semester. In Jammu and Kashmir, 33 out of 100 is the minimum marks required to pass an examination.

This incident came in as a rude shock to Mohammad's parents as their son had answered all the questions in the Physics paper with ease. Hilal Ahmad Gilkar, Mohammad's father recalls his son telling him he was confident that he had done well in the paper.

In a report to dna, Gilkar holds the authorities of the education system responsible for his son's death. He calls it a 'murder' and not suicide as his son was forced to take such an extreme step because of the lack of accountability of some people in the system. "It is a murder and people responsible for it need to be identified and acted against as per the service rules of the government," said Gilkar as tears rolled down his eyes.

After the death of his son, Gilkar applied for a re-evaluation of his son's Physics paper in which he was declared pass this time around. It took the Jammu and Kashmir State Board of Technical Education (JKSBOTE) four long months to realise Mohammad's correct score. Although admitting to their mistake, the authorities casually dismissed this occurrence by stating that such incidents happen in other universities as well.

student suicides are a regular feature in india and contribute to india's status as "suicide capital of the world".

while the father has rightly called it murder, he also must see that parents, especially mothers, are equally responsible for student suicides... in india, a student's exam marks becomes a reason for triumph or defeat in a game of oneupmanship in gossip sessions between that student's parents ( especially the mother ) and relatives or neighbors or office colleagues... the stupid parents inflict their unnecessary pressures upon their children.

another thing is india being a extremely capitalist society to the extent that a typical mother here will respect her son only when he brings her the "rokda" ( money ) through monthly salaries, and salaries come through useless jobs ( wage-slavery ), and to get the salary ( the higher the better ), the son will have to get high marks in useless exams in the mostly useless education system and to get the son to do that, the mother will inflict pressure upon the son disregarding his real interests.

and why can't the parents not allow their children to drop out of colleges or not go to college in the first place is because the parents have failed in their own life to have sufficient money to keep their children out of jobs, and they have failed or didn't even think of making india a society where money does not dictate life... these failure parents dump their poverty burden on their children who will in time marry, procreate and dump the inherited burden on their own children, and like this has passed four generations since 1947 ( india's "independence" ).

to hell with such parents for whom money and exams marks are greater than the happiness of their children... to hell with such a education/social/economic system.

Absolutely, 100% corrrect.

Indian/Pakistani parents are the pushiest on earth. Collecting degrees and getting high marks are on par with life and death. I have never seen English parents even remotely similar.

Also the link between education and status simply doesn't exist here.

If they fail govt will provide unemployed benefit, state healthcare, food stamps....etc
Guess in subcontinent society will altogether kill you if poverty doesnt.

True. Even if you're unemployed you will always have a home and be fed, so the desperation is not there.

But there is an insane level of social status linked to education in the sub-continent.

.
First of all, the people responsible for this should be tried on charges of murder but the deceased should have rather showed faith in Allah instead being so disappointed that he took his own life. May Allah forgive his sin and may his soul rest in peace.

Very well said but a bit of exaggeration with regards to the pressure from the mothers. But the problem cannot be totally attributed to the parents alone. For almost 50 years, the governments have failed to provide the opportunities to the people. You cannot expect people at level 1 or 2 to perform at level 4 or 5. It will take time to progress up the chain.

Well, hands down, he failed the most important exam. Life. I personally have no sympathy for losers who fail to understand the gift of life. Rest in whatever corner of hell that has been assigned to him.
Be a little sympathetic. Young kids don't necessarily think things through and get carried away.

I would rather blame the parents than this kid for giving him a warped view of life.

.
The father is silly to accuse the exam board of murder.

This is suicide and the blame lies only with the person who took his own life.

I remember when i was in 8th grade a student of tenth grade failed in math by a new teacher after argument with the teacher he cut his hand with the blade but luckily he survived, after the investigation by senior teachers and principle they found that somehow teacher lost the answer sheet and he thinks might student deliberately not attached his sheets so he decided to declare him fail but when they found answer sheet he got 95% marks.

I take it sympathy was never your strong point?
