What's new

Botswana going for Eight Gripen C/D.

Ahahahah....... It's not just Botswana. Western Europe is in sone sort of self inflicted decline due to decades of peace , prosperity, democracy and stability leading to complacency. Hopefully all European countries will scrap their military altogether this coming decade or two.:D

True, in fact I will even say it's one of the best governed country in Africa(that includes north Africa as well) and corruption is very low there as well. It's a very peaceful beautiful country. I really enjoyed my stay there. :)

Yes bro. We really enjoyed our stay(me and my lady) in Bostwana. That was a few years ago though.
It's indeed one if the most beautiful and welcoming country I have been to. The people are so friendly and always happy.

Will tell you one interesting story I had there. We visited the beautiful Chobe National Park where we met a famous man called Limbo who was a guard there. I guess you know him since he seemed to be quite famous in the country?
He famously refused access to the presidential convoy one night even when he was asked to open the gates from the president of the republic himself, but he rightly refused since presidential convoy pulled up, seeking entry into the park after closing hours to make a short cut to their destination. But since according to the law Limbo was instructed not to let anyone in the park after dark he took this instruction literally and acted accordingly. The presidential convoy was left with no choice but to turn back .From what we were told, not long after the incident, Limbo received a letter from the president inviting him to Gaborone (Botswana’s capital city), where the president awarded him a medal (we saw him wearing it proudly) in recognition of his commitment and adherence to the rules. This was one of the most interesting encounter I had during my stay there. It also shows how the country has the rule of law works in the county. it's no wonder Botswana Botswana also ranks near the top of the list of countries in the world for transparency and very low in terms of corruption.

Many people ask how did Botswana avoid the “resource course” that sends other countries in Africa,m iddle East etc into the kind of fits of violence and wealth-controlling corruption that often accompanies the discovery and exploitation of oil, diamonds and other minerals. It has to do with governance and public awareness/willingness to work together for the greater good of the country. The government has invested massively in things like free education and health care, science etc and there are free and fair elections where power is transferred peacefully from incumbent to the victor(whether opposition party or not). Something you don't see in many African and middle Eastern countries.

I have to commend Bostwana government and peole for making their country proud. no wonder I have never seen a Batswana in any European country I have been to . Since there is no need for them to travel abroad in search of greener pastures, asylum, beter life like other developing countries do so often. This should be a lesson to those naïve people always blaming all their troubles and ills on western powers. They should learn from Bostwana(a former British colony) :)

Great my friend. where did you go.... we should have connected; it is a pity, we cannot PM each other.
I visited Okavango Delta (the best unspoiled wilderness area I have seen in my life),
Chobe national park and it's elephants(which I mentioned earlier), Maun, Kasane, Francistown, mokoldi nature reserve and solido(or something like that, if I spelt them correctly.lol ). Those are the places I can remember off head. Can't remember all the names of the other places we visited, they are hard to spell/pronounce. :P

It is clear, you have not been to Botswana :). Police people dont even carry guns. Only around 15000 hunting rifles permitted in entire population. A basic rifle permit can cost you $20,000.... yes, you read it correct. They dont issue it and hence have to buy it from an existing owner.

There are no enemies, Tswana people are the most gentle and warm people you will ever meet. Only issue we have is illegals from Zims who are trucked back daily; you wont see the Nigerian riff rafs either; they tried to take drugs thru this country; police put them in a big truck and dropped them into the kalahari desert. Issue died on its own.

You commit armed robbery, you will hang. No ifs or buts. Try to give a policeman a bribe, 3 months in the slammer no questions asked.
Which is exactly why the Botswanan air force deserves Gripens: you mess with our airspace, we put you down. It is not the people from Botswana that I am worried about.

Lo True to some extent. Bostwana needs to protect its beautiful, peaceful, democratic, prosperous and stable country.
This is the kind of country we ought to defend if they ever came under attack. Since Bostwana is a shiny example if what other developing countries can achieve if the people and leader really have the will to change their country for the best while putting aside their differences. We should keep encouraging them in this regard.

It seems overkill for Botswana. They are better served by used F-16s or if new the M-346 or the even cheaper scorpion.

I guess this country whose per capita GDP is ten times over that of India and whose prime export item is diamonds, can afford it financially.

Botswana is borders by South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia, and very close to Angola
South Africa: 26 Saab Gripen C and D, 24 British Aerospace Hawk Mk.120
Namibia: 6 Mig 21, 8 Chengdu F7 (8 more on order), 12 Hongdu JL-8/K-8 Karakorum
Zimbabwe: ? mig-29, ? mig 23, Hongdu JL-8/K8
Zambia: 10 MiG-21-2000, 10 Shenyang J-6 (mig 19), 2 Hongdu JL-15 (2 more on order), 16 Hongdu JL-8/K8
Angola: 23 MiG-21bis, 22 MiG-23 some supplied by Belarus, 14 Sukhoi Su-22 fighter / bomber some were supplied by Belarus, 12 Sukhoi Su-25, 1 Sukhoi Su-27 and 0 Sukhoi Su-30 (12 on order).

As indicated, Gripen is a good choice if South Africa can provide maintenance.

A CF-5 cannot catch a Mig 21/J7, which can fly faster and higher. Likewise Mig 23, Mig 29, Su-27, Su-30. Mig 19/J6 flies higher but not faster. Su 22 is slower but has better ceiling.

I live 70km from the border and have family who are citizens there
That would be Mokopane? I have eaten, some good steaks/beef tails there.
and across the border you have:

Apparently the plan is to use South Africa assets for maintaining the planes,
so using the same plane makes sense.

The US should issue one of these and pay off their debt.

Welcome at any time my dear friend. I will recommend that you read No 1 Ladies Detective. You will thoroughly enjoy the series. HBO aired it as well as a serial; funny part, entire crew stayed at my family's lodge for 6 months during the shooting. Some of the kids in the serial were same class as my nephews.

Mokolodi.... man, it is right in the backyard... i will dig up some old photos to add up here.

Thanks man, refreshing writing this..... just aweful bullying and harassment by a lunatic DESERT FIGHTER. He just kept on coming after me over and over making racists comments and yet despite reporting to moderators; he is still around.... amazing man... just amazing .... i invited him to come and attend local mosque where it is so peaceful with meals cooked and served for the community and who ever wants to come and eat. Instead -- he keeps on with verbal assault. Completely uneducated lunatics all over.

Man, next time you are here you must ask for Mampoer and mopane worms...... Did you get to eat biltong? Yes, we are truely blessed with finest beef and cattle. FInally rains have come in full force and it will be a great year.

True but the focus needs to be on continued infrastructure, development, health and education. Our MPs are pushing for that; the order may be cut from my friends in BDF ... lets see where the elephant chooses to sit; we have more pressing priorities right now with influx daily from Zims.
