The Botswana Defence Force (BDF) Airwing will be acquiring eight Swedish Gripen fighter jets according to the Business Weekly and Review.

This follows a May report that the African country was in talks with Sweden regarding the purchase of the fighter jets from Saab. Sweden’s defence materiel agency (FMV) confirmed “a dialogue” had been initiated with Botswana regarding eight C/D versions of the Gripen.

The Botswana-based publication indication the total cost of the acquisition, which it said would be 16 of the multi-role fighters, would be between $1,45 to $1,63 billion and that delivery would be “within two to three years”. In the same report it changes the number of aircraft to be bought from 16 down to eight.

Are these brand new builds or from existing stock?

If they buy it from SAAB, it will be new planes.
The planes in the Swedish Air Force are not something SAAB can sell.
Don't think the Swedish Air Force has a lot to sell.

Maybe they should approach South Africa, LOL...

.
So,probably 8 fighters for 725-815 million $.

They probably didn't get the memo that they could get the same quality with 280 million $ with the JF17(8 x 35 million $) . @DESERT FIGHTER

You'd be a dumb arse to think jets are sold only at fly away costs without spares, training, maintaince and other costs thrown into a deal..

We sold 20 Super Mushaks to Iraq for almost 300 million.

Do tell us if you think this cost 10-15 million a pop;

Or Botswana is buying Gripen Cs for 90 -100 million a pop..

Mushshak sale to Iraq was about 94 million USD in full ... means less than 5 million USD/piece

The President of Botswana is currently in Sweden, and will visit SAAB.
Meanwhile the opposition threatens to cancel any deal,
since they feel there is no need for an air force.
The Swedish Government is criticized by different organisations for focusing
on the economy of Sweden instead of fighting poverty in Africa.

The President admits that a defense based on "bows and arrows" would be cheaper.

There is a lot of pushback in parliament. Botswana has no need for these pricy aircraft; right now they operate CF-5s.

Note - Botswana has one of the best government service delivery to its citizens. In Africa it stands in highest ratings.
I live 70km from the border and have family who are citizens there

The reason for going gripen was being able to service the aircraft in SA.

That is why the opponents are questioning the deal.

It is 1,7B$ for the full deal.
Their F-5s are apparently close to end of life, so relying on them is not an option.

Botswana is borders by South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Zambia, and very close to Angola
South Africa: 26 Saab Gripen C and D, 24 British Aerospace Hawk Mk.120
Namibia: 6 Mig 21, 8 Chengdu F7 (8 more on order), 12 Hongdu JL-8/K-8 Karakorum
Zimbabwe: ? mig-29, ? mig 23, Hongdu JL-8/K8
Zambia: 10 MiG-21-2000, 10 Shenyang J-6 (mig 19), 2 Hongdu JL-15 (2 more on order), 16 Hongdu JL-8/K8
Angola: 23 MiG-21bis, 22 MiG-23 some supplied by Belarus, 14 Sukhoi Su-22 fighter / bomber some were supplied by Belarus, 12 Sukhoi Su-25, 1 Sukhoi Su-27 and 0 Sukhoi Su-30 (12 on order).

Effective air policing would require something more potent than 18 (ancient) CF-5 imho.

Ahahahah....... It's not just Botswana. Western Europe is in sone sort of self inflicted decline due to decades of peace , prosperity, democracy and stability leading to complacency. Hopefully all European countries will scrap their military altogether this coming decade or two.:D

True, in fact I will even say it's one of the best governed country in Africa(that includes north Africa as well) and corruption is very low there as well. It's a very peaceful beautiful country. I really enjoyed my stay there. :)

It is clear, you have not been to Botswana :). Police people dont even carry guns. Only around 15000 hunting rifles permitted in entire population. A basic rifle permit can cost you $20,000.... yes, you read it correct. They dont issue it and hence have to buy it from an existing owner.

There are no enemies, Tswana people are the most gentle and warm people you will ever meet. Only issue we have is illegals from Zims who are trucked back daily; you wont see the Nigerian riff rafs either; they tried to take drugs thru this country; police put them in a big truck and dropped them into the kalahari desert. Issue died on its own.

You commit armed robbery, you will hang. No ifs or buts. Try to give a policeman a bribe, 3 months in the slammer no questions asked.
