Border intruders won't be shot, Delhi tells Dhaka

Delhi has reiterated its assurance to Dhaka that its Border Security Force (BSF) will not shoot at Bangladeshis crossing the border. Indian external affairs minister SM Krishna gave the assurance to his Bangladeshi counterpart Dipu Moni when they met on the sidelines of a two-day meet of the SAARC foreign ministers in the Bhutanese capital Thimphu on Monday.

Krishna told Moni that "adequate steps were being taken to address the issue", official news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) reported.

At the home secretary-level talks held in Dhaka last month, India regretted a Jan 7 incident in which a teenage girl, Felani, who was crossing the border along with her family, was shot dead by the BSF.

The family was returning from Delhi and the incident occurred at the border near Kurigram, northeastern Bangladesh.

New Age newspaper Wednesday said tension mounted in Felani's village in Kurigram district as the local unit of the ruling Awami League announced a rally at the venue where supporters of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) were scheduled to hold a rally to protest Felani's killing.

"The local administration ordered a ban on gatherings in and around Felani's house for today (Wednesday), fearing trouble," the media report said.

Bangladeshi human rights body Odhikar claims that over 1,000 people have been shot dead by the BSF since 2001.

The BSF says its men shoot "in self defence" as intruders include armed men engaged in smuggling of humans, cattle, arms and drugs.

So how do we plan to stop the illegal migrants? Rubber bullets? More personnel on the ground?

Could be. I guess we have a similar arrangement with Nepal.

But I think our relation with BD haven't been as smooth as with Nepal's .The trouble with BD border is that too many of incidents of anti-India activities by BD'eshis have come to light. To allow free movement across the border will make it difficult to track such people.

Do you drink some milk every day to bring back some of your MAGZ? Where do you find illegal immigrant from BD to a poor India where the living standard is below sub-Saharan countries of Africa? Get out of your stupid shell mind and see other countries of the world including BD. You will invariably see the worst living standard is in India. So, shut your mouth up!

No, no dissolving of border, because then millions of hungry Indians will escape to our land.

this newspaper account is wrong. I have read in another newspaper that this family has relatives in assam, and they were returning from there. Otherwise, why it should be Kurigram?

India should annex Bangladesh and give it back to Pakistan, at least Pakistanis can guard their border properly.

Nepalese fight and die for India, Bangladeshis kill and rejoice Indian uniformed soldiers.

The ideologically blind imagine, it takes one to tango, normally the ''other''.

The Nepal border is indeed used by inimical forces, as its a free border and easy to use. However its used by all kinds of ideologies and people who are mainly foreign to Nepal.

The Nepal India problem is also a popular misconception among people who don't have open borders with ANY of their neighbors. As I said, the ideologically blinded...

Good move,
killing illegal migrants is not the answer. Killing for whatever reason is never the answer. Maybe a combination of non lethal weapons, and unmanned intruder alarms/sensors will do the trick. Better harnessing of technology will certainly help. Certainly the killing should stop.
