MANILA — The Philippines military dropped bombs from planes and rained artillery shells on southern rebels on Monday, the third day of a siege of militants sympathetic to Daesh (the so-called IS), during which 35 guerrillas have been killed, the army said.

Several US-made OV-10B planes circled in the air before diving and dropping payloads on fortified positions of the Maute rebel group, which has occupied a town hall in Lanao province, said army spokesman Major Filemon Tan.

“As of noon today, there’s heavy engagement in the area as our troops are conducting clearing operations,” Tan said, adding 13 soldiers were wounded in the offensive, which began on Saturday.

Thousands of residents have fled as hundreds of troops, backed by heavy artillery and armored vehicles, moved in to flush out the rebels.

Italian-made trainer planes and OV-10 Bronco aircraft were also called in help retake the old municipal hall.

The government has blamed the Maute Group for a Sept. 2 bombing at a street market in the hometown of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte that killed 14 people and wounded dozens.

Several suspected members of the group were arrested a month later and, according to the defense minister, video clips were found of them pledging loyalty to the Daesh cause.

Duterte has recently been warning about the possibility of Daesh taking root in the Philippines if driven out of Iraq and Syria, saying his country needed to avoid their “contamination,” as did Malaysia and Indonesia.

Tan said the military was trying to contain fighting in the area and keep it from spilling over to other areas in Mindanao.

“A heavy fight is ongoing, but we hope to neutralize this Maute group soon,” he added. — AFP

This is a global war, every country must fight this extremist ideology.
As I said before, we must fight this poisonous idologies where ever we find them.
Daesh aka isis will be defeated.

How did this come about? Daesh in Philippines? o_O

Background anybody???

This is what happens when you allow Salafi clerics into your country, that push religion in a rushed manner, by resorting to belief based techniques. Which cloud peoples judgement, logic, ability to enjoy things in life. And these selfish clerics do not care about the wellbeing of the people, they just care about achieving their agenda(which is related to their state), and need more influence. Because it means more control and more money coming in for them.

Salafi's try to brandish themselves as the 'original' Muslims, and have succeeded into making people believe this. And this is the end result, they become popular, make people backwards, start threatening moderate Sunni Islamist parties and Shia's, and rule ruthlessly committing all kinds of abuses and using people for their interests.

But's it's all okay, because in the end, Saudi's, Israel and the US benefit, because they greatly weaken the Muslim Brotherhood, they attack the pro-Iran axis and destroy Syria in the process, along with trying to do so in other nations, and they allow these Salafist's to assume Islam's image, then using that to demonize MB, Palestinians and the rest of the pro-Iran axis(even though they're Shia and enemies of Salafi's), so as to benefit Israel and secure support from the Western public.

There definitely is a problem within Islam, but that's not to say nothing can be done about these Salafi's, much can be done, but the powers rather have them be in control of Sunni Islam hierarchy currently. Because they're so detrimental to most Muslims, but benefit a select few among Muslims and other powers.

i think every rebel group just make alliance with daesh to be more prominent or get fund and recruits from evrywhere...

The global injustice must end and there should be justice to muslims as well. Until the root causes addressed the violence will not stop

Look like M-101's in action. A decent range of 11 km.

Philipine Army has just a handful of 155mm howitzers in service.

How come Daesh reached philipines man??? This sounds like crazy...

This war goes back to the Spanish occupation of the Philippines and forcible conversion to Christianity. Prior to that a Caliphate had existed in the Philippines. Filipino Muslims are staunch in their belied in the faith. They are a courageous and resilient lot. Insha Allah they will prevail.

MANILA — Three Filipino soldiers were killed and 17 others wounded in nearly two hours of fighting with about 150 militants in the south, the military said on Sunday.

The Abu Sayyaf gunmen withdrew after the fierce clash on Saturday in the mountains of Patikul town in Sulu province, and are being pursued by government forces, said regional military spokesman Maj. Filemon Tan.

An unspecified number of militants were either wounded or killed in the latest flare-up in a monthslong offensive ordered by President Rodrigo Duterte. Tan said the troops were backed by assault aircraft and artillery fire.

The militants were led by Radulan Sahiron, a one-armed commander long wanted by the US and Philippine governments for his alleged role in kidnappings for ransom and other acts. The Abu Sayyaf, an offshoot of a decadeslong rebellion in the predominantly Roman Catholic nation’s south, have survived numerous military offensives, partly thanks to money earned from kidnappings.

In neighboring Malaysia, security forces killed three Abu Sayyaf gunmen and captured two others in a failed kidnapping attempt in Malaysia’s Sabah state near the southern Philippines on Thursday. Two other militants were missing after their speedboat was hit by gunfire and sank.

Among those killed was Abraham Hamid, an Abu Sayyaf militant who, the Philippine military said, acted as a spotter in the kidnappings of two Canadians, a Norwegian and a Filipina in the southern Philippines last year. The two Canadians were beheaded and the other two hostages were freed reportedly in exchange for ransom.

Duterte and his Malaysian and Indonesian counterparts have struggled to deal with a wave of attacks by the Abu Sayyaf and allied gunmen who target tugboats and cargo ships in the busy sea waterway. The ransom kidnappings of Malaysian and Indonesian crewmen have continued despite heightened coastal and border security.

Duterte recently said he had agreed to let Malaysian and Indonesian forces cross the sea border while pursuing militants and their victims. More controversially, he said it was OK for the Malaysian and Indonesian forces to bomb the militants along with their captives to ensure the kidnappers would be eradicated.
