The State needs to send a strong message that this extremist behavior and ideology is unacceptable.

Unfortunately it seems as though Pakistan will have to have cathartic civil war between the religious zealots who want to engage in violent jihad and those who want a tolerant society. The reason a civil war may be necessary is that a suspension of many of the trappings of democracy may be necessary to deal with the sympathizers as well as the perpetrators of the violence. The only alternative I can see is a period of a benign dictator, like Ataturk, who, by force, imposes the Jinnah vision on the politics of Pakistan. Both approaches inevitably create injustices and unfair outcomes for many. But what is the alternative? Years and years of insecurity and fear when sending your kids to school or just walking along the street? Violence in the name of Islam must be absolutely denounced by every religious authority. Those religious leaders who will not clearly and publicly and privately denounce violence should be stripped of their religious mantel and imprisoned if they persist in claiming to preach or teach Islam. If it takes an emergency suspension of some constitutional rights to do this, so be it.

May Allah receive the souls of the innocents into his loving embrace.

i think same is happening in Baluchistan and swat but no result...Govt. should think about another option..

Dont stop killing unless they lay down their weapons and start a peaceful life. And yes, other options should also be examined, but killing and jailing must have priority.

World Bank and IMF predicted that Pakistan will be a devolpt country before 2025, with the Floods and Terrorist attacks, i can defiently say we have been held bck for 10 years. I just hope now that the new projects in Karachi and Islamabad will recover Pakistan's Econmy. Lahore unfortuntly has been suffering alot of Terrorists attacks, so i doubt businesses would increase there.

Even without the flood and terrorism, pakistan would never be able to be a DEVELOPED country in 2025.

PESHAWAR: At least one man was killed and four wounded Friday when a suicide bomber blew himself up outside an Ahmadi place of worship in Mardan, police said.

“A suicide bomber was trying to enter the Ahmadis’ worship place, but he was intercepted by the guards outside and blew himself up,” Mardan police chief Waqif Khan told AFP.

“A passerby was killed and four others were wounded in the firing and suicide attack,” Khan said, adding that it was unclear whether the man was killed by the bomb or by gunshots fired by the guards.

Police have handed over the bomber’s body parts to a forensic team, he said.

In May nearly 100 people were killed in the eastern city of Lahore after militants stormed two Ahmadi prayer halls launching gun and grenade attacks.

Gunmen later raided the hospital where victims were being treated, killing four people in a shoot out.

I don't think we need a civil war - a strong government/ruler that acts mercilessly along the lines of Ataturk (though not necessarily pushing the country that far towards secularism) in dealing with religious extremists would do the trick. Again, arrest, tar, feather and hang any Imam, scholar, personality or individual who talks along the lines I mentioned previously.

In the current climate in Pakistan (and Iraq and Afghanistan) this kind of rhetoric is the equivalent of falsely shouting fire in a crowded theater. These people are perpetuating an intolerant and extremist ideology that eventually morphs, through someone, into those who commit and plot such acts. These people are therefore the enemy. I see no benefit to society from allowing them to exist, and plenty of tangible harm if they are.

The State has to set the agenda here, since it is by default the loudest voice and the strongest stick, and the message by the State should be 'NO tolerance of hate speech or intolerant and extremist ideology'.

I think it's more to do with the idiotic Ordinance passed by shameless dictator Zia who has outlawed Ahmadis using anything Islamic. The press has to follow state law, no matter how pathetic they are.

I congratulate the Ahmadi guards who shot at the suicide bomber and warded off higher causalities in the mosque.

Only our cities are developed, not our country (rural part) and our ruling elite wants to keep it that way.

Yes - given the trajectory it was on before the spike in terrorism and floods.

Remember that the WB provided a 17% poverty rate for Pakistan for 2008, and this year, before the floods and despite terrorism, economic growth rate was projected at above 4%. It would have been even higher were it not for the terrorist problem.

Take all that together and getting into the ranks of Malaysia, if not 100% developed nation, was very feasible in 15 years.

Correct, but the rural middle class was coming up. Note the 1.3 million bikes sold in 2009. Industry sources argued that the spike in sales was primarily because of the rural middle class purchases.

Sadly, the rural middle class is going to be the main section damaged by the recent floods.
