ntelligence officials suspect that terror outfit Indian Mujahideen is behind the blast in Pune's German bakery that killed eight people and injured dozens of others on Saturday.

IB reports suggest that Pune was becoming the nerve centre of the Indian Mujahideen, with the maximum number of modules functional in the state after Mumbai

The IM was planning to carry out a major blast at the Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party offices in New Delhi , but they had to cancel their plans after key operative Shahzad alias Pappu was arrested from Azamgarh, say IB officials.

IB sources say that local modules of the IM were instructed to carry out the blast. The blast indicates a local connection, as the person who planted the bomb in the bag had sufficient information about the lay-out of the bakery, according to sources in the Anti-Terrorism Squad.

"We are still ascertaining as to who the foreign hand behind the blasts could be," ATS sources said.

The ATS will send details of the blast site to its forensics department. The forensics team will also inspect another suspicious-looking bag that was found at the site.

According to the Intelligence Bureau, the prime suspect in the incident is Riyaz Bhatkal, who is currently hiding in Karachi.

Bhatkal, who was hiding in Karnataka , fled to Pakistan via Dubai after the Bengaluru blasts. He has been constantly monitoring the resurrection of the Indian Mujahideen and has been trying to strengthen the organisation's base in Pune over the last few months.

The Pune module was set up to make the city a terror base and strike at important cities such as Mumbai. However, with security being beefed up in Mumbai, the IM probably planned to carry out a smaller strike in Pune to send out a warning signal, say IB sources.

The IM, which wanted to target foreigners, found Pune's Koregaon Park as an ideal target, they say.

He, however, said government would wait for the forensic report before drawing a conclusion.

"This is a sad event. Significant terrorist incident after 14 months", Chidambaram told mediapersons on the eve of his visit to Pune where the blast tore through the landmark German bakery in Koregaon locality killing 9 people and wounding 45.

The Home Minister said he was "deeply distressed" by the Pune blast and "all the information available to us at the moment point to a plot to explode a device in a place that is frequented by foreigners as well as Indians".

Chidambaram said the device was exploded in the eatery part of the German Bakery which was a short distance away from the Osho Ashram and from the Chabad House, Jewish prayer house.

He said the Centre had sensitized the Maharashtra government and the police that the Chabad House was a target of terrorists and today's incident happened just a few metres away from the Chabad House.

Chidambaram said forensic experts have already reached the blast site in Pune.

The Home Minister asked the media not to speculate and give "some time" to the government "to gather forensic evidence and draw some conclusions and go by the official statement that are put out".

"I promise you there will be an official statement once every four or six hours. So, please don't speculate on this and that".

Inconsistencies and probably because it is simply speculation and conjecture. Has Dubai's immigration authorities verified that Bhatkal fled to Pakistan?

If he did flee to Pakistan was he on any sort of international terror list and should Pakistan have stopped him? Should Dubai have stopped him? Should India have stopped him in the first place?

If Pune was being built up as the IM HQ why'd they throw it all down the drain by carrying out their attacks in Pune? Pretty much every cop would be combing it down looking for IM operatives now. Seems like a big change of plans to blow up one bakery.

Doesn't Pune have better targets to kill foreigners than a dhaba style bakery?

This is the first terror attack since the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, 15 months ago. For the last two months, there has been a growing buzz of an imminent terror attack, especially as India and Pakistan were preparing to resume talks that have been suspended since the Mumbai carnage. Now there is a question mark over the talks scheduled for February 25 in Delhi.

The blast, which left a 6ftx4ft hole in the wall, took place at 7.15pm when the bakery was milling with people, many of them foreigners. According to Union home secretary G K Pillai, there was an unattended packet which exploded when a waiter tried to open it.

The German Bakery is a popular haunt of foreigners like Leopold restaurant in Mumbai — in fact, both are mentioned by the Lonely Planet tourist guide and are therefore patronised by many backpackers.

Investigators from the Army’s bomb disposal squad said it appears that a battery-operated improvised explosive device had been used. ‘‘We have found traces of an explosive,’’ said M Z Ansari, an official. The impact was such that the walls of the bakery caved in. Body parts of some of the dead were found strewn on the North Main Road and near the O Hotel, a few metres from the bakery.

‘‘The dead include some foreigners but we are yet to establish their nationality,’’ minister of state for home Ramesh Bagwe said. The injured suffered burns and fractures, said doctors at Sassoon hospital.

Chabad House in Mumbai which was attacked on 26/11 had been recced by Headley, just as he had recced the one in Pune. Headley had stayed at the Surya Villa hotel in Koregaon, which is close to the blast site.

In Delhi, Pillai called an emergency meeting of security officials and instructed all state capitals to be put on high alert. A team also began interrogation of the Batla House terror suspect, Shahzad Ahmad, to find out if he had any information about an attack in Pune.

The Centre immediately moved in to rush a forensic team to Pune. “It is most probably a terror attack. We are sending a forensic team of CBI and personnel of National Investigative Agency,” said Union home secretary G K Pillai.

Panic gripped the city as the news of the blast spread. The police, however, refused to confirm whether any terror group was involved, saying it was too early to arrive at any conclusion. The police closed all roads to Koregaon Park area and a nakabandi has been ordered across the city.

‘‘We suspect foreigners could be involved in this blast,’’ said special secretary (home) U K Bansal, when asked in Delhi whether he suspected any specific terror group. The state home minister R R Patil reached Pune late on Saturday night, while chief minister Ashok Chavan is expected to be in the city on Saturday.

Maharashtra deputy CM Chhagan Bhujbal and some officials said that police had inputs about a threat to the German Bakery and security had been beefed up in the Koregaon area, but state home minister R R Patil denied there was any intelligence input about an attack.

The allegation that a known terrorist fled out of the country is like saying Hakimullah Mehsud fled out of the country from the Jinnah terminal.

When there is a terror attack, the investigators try to figure out who is the most likely culprit. This is not an allegation, just the pointing of most likely bet based on prima facie evidence. The borders are porous and there are many ways to enter and exit (enroute BD or Nepal?). The intelligence knows better than us forum warriors.

Why is India giving a free-hand to the Maoist and their most likely sympathizers and supporters in Beijing. It's been confirmed by Indian Army sources and Intelligences sources that their is a nexus between the two.

If the Indian Government will full awareness of this information is STILL giving Maoist and their backers in China this free-hand, then no greater blame can be placed on anyone but the Indian Government.


Very unfortunate situation today the Government must be called into question.

Let me make clear for once and all that Maoist or Naxalites have never attacked an urban India city out of its more than 50 odd tier 1or tier 2 cities in decades of their history.

Maoist or Naxalites have never harmed indiscriminately against any civilian even in small village or dense forest where they usually operates.Thats why u see pseudo intellectuals like Arundhati Roy get away espousing Maoist cause with little castigation from general public.In other words there is no reason believe that Naxalites would stoop so low to attack a Bakery frequented foreigners in urban area like pune where they have no interest to safeguard.

This attacks bears all the hallmarks of Indian Mujahindin which is executed with help from their Pakistani backers.Damn them...these guys deserve death in the most cruel form.

This is the most interesting thing i find about all bomb blasts executed by Indian mujahidin, whether attacks carried out at city of Jaipur ,Ahmadabad or New Delhi ... they have one more thing in common expect for the perpetrators....they all happened on Saturdays.Yesterday was also a Saturday.

If the intention was to scare Indians - that is not going to work - Indians have (unfortunately) got used to such blasts and attacks.
If you notice earlier the strategy of the terrorists was to attack Red Fort, Parliament, Akshardham - places important to India and Indians.

Lately economic targets and targets frequented by foreigners and rich Indians are being chosen - Pune (IT hub) , Bangalore (IT hub with many foreigners), Delhi (posh areas like CP, GK where there are many foreigners), Mumbai (5 star hotels with foreigners and rich Indians).

Clear shift in strategy. I would forsee more attacks on the Commonwealth games, IPL etc.
As I am working in a foreign MNC all this is troublesome. If it is unsafe for foreigners in India this will have an impact on MNCs here.
It's clear that we are up against an intelligent enemy. We need to investigate who is planning these attacks and go after them.

Yeah, i mean there were many foreigners of north Indian origin watching "My name is khan" in that Bakery and also Shiv Sena is famous for its IED expertise they bring with them every time they do some demonstration.
