Blast in Model Town, Lahore

Blast in Lahore.

11 dead. 60 Injured.

A suicide car bomb attack on a police intelligence unit in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore killed at least 11 people and wounded about 60 on Monday during the morning rush hour, officials said.

The attack outside a federal police office bore all the hallmarks of an operation by al Qaeda-backed Pakistani Taliban militants seeking to topple the government.

Provincial government official Khusro Pervaiz told reporters that 11 people were killed and 60 wounded in the blast.

"It's clear that the office of the investigation agency was the target," he said.

The violence may be a psychological setback for Pakistani authorities, who have made recent gains against homegrown militants and won praise from ally Washington after capturing high-profile Afghan Taliban figures.

A doctor at the hospital treating victims said the dead included a woman and a child.

The blast left a huge crater in the road outside the office of the main police investigation agency, the Federal Investigation Agency, and destroyed the front of the building.

The agency has been attacked at least twice before in Lahore.

Television showed pictures of a man covered in blood trapped in a car and passersby trying to help him out while rescuers searched through the rubble.

Some angry residents shouted at police as they arrived at the scene in Lahore's Model Town residential neighbourhood.

"We repeatedly asked them to please move this office away from our houses but they didn't give a damn," one woman said.

Stock market investors, growing used to bomb attacks across the country, shrugged off the latest violence, dealers said.

"The market has become sort of immune to these acts of terror and it only reacts if the damage is huge," said Khalid Iqbal Siddiqui, director at brokers Invest and Finance Securities.

Dealers said healthy foreign flows into the market in recent days had helped investor sentiment.

The Karachi Stock Exchange's benchmark 100-share index was 0.67 percent higher at 9,690.54 at 0511 GMT

God damn you taliban bastards

LAHORE, Pakistan, March 8 (Xinhua) -- A suicide bomber Monday rammed his explosive-packed vehicle into the office of a Pakistani 's investigation agency in the eastern city of Lahore and killed at least 11 and injured some 60, police said.

Officials said that suspected militants were being interrogated in the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) building.

Police said that guards at the building at the city's Model Town challenged the bomber but he detonated his vehicle.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. But suspected Taliban militants attacked the FIA building in Lahore in the past.

The FIA building was complete and the blast was so powerful that it caused damage to several nearby houses. Officials said that several employees of the FIA had been residing in the building.

Windows of several buildings including a religious seminary were smashed, residents said.

Officials said that dozens of people were inside the FIA building when the bomb struck the office that took place at 8:15 a. m.. Officials said that the FIA had set up the office of its Special Investigation Unit in the building.

Ambulances rushed to the site and shifted the injured to several nearby hospitals. Locals also shifted the injured in private vehicles.

Rescue teams and the residents joined hands to pull the injured out of the rubble. Witnesses said that the blast created a 25-feet deep crater.

Pakistani Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani condemned the attack and asked the authorities to hold investigation into the attack.

District Police Officer Sajjad Bhutta visited the attack site and said that the authorities had taken security measures for the building but said that it is difficult for the police to stop suicide bombings.

Head of the nearby seminary said the residents had requested the government to shift the office from residential area but he complained that their request was not entertained.

Several schools, located in the area, were closed after the attack and parents rushed to schools to take their children.
