It is not clear where or how Mir Balaach Marri died
A top rebel leader from Pakistan's troubled province of Balochistan has been killed, his family says.

Mir Balaach Marri, alleged head of the banned Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), was killed in Afghanistan, Pakistani intelligence sources told the BBC.

The BLA and rebel tribesmen have been fighting Pakistani security forces for more provincial autonomy since 2000.

Nationalists say the mineral-rich province has been deprived of its rightful share of its own resources.

'Covert operation'

Mr Balaach's brother, Sardar Gazain Marri, said he had learnt of the rebel leader's death on Tuesday evening.

"Some of his comrades informed me he had been martyred," he told the BBC.

"I cannot disclose the location as it would further threaten the lives of those with him."

Sardar Marri says he believes his brother was killed in an army operation in Balochistan.

"I believe there were a clashes in the province on Tuesday in which Mir Balaach was killed."

However, intelligence officials in Pakistan told the BBC the rebel leader had been killed in Afghanistan.

They also declined to discuss the circumstances surrounding his killing.

Analysts say the killing could have been the result of a covert operation.

War and escape

Mir Balaach Khan Marri is said to have been the military mastermind behind the Baloch rebels.

Observers say the uprising could now be in trouble with the rebels' operational leader dead

The second son of one of Balochistan's premier tribal chiefs, Sardar Khair Bux Marri, Mir Balach Marri was a committed nationalist.

He resigned from the provincial parliament in 2003, complaining that Balochistan was still being deprived of its rights.

The province is Pakistan's largest, and its richest in natural resources. It has some of the biggest proven reserves of natural gas in the world.

There are also large deposits of gold, copper and other minerals.

The rebels say most of these resources are appropriated by the federal government, while locals are denied employment in regional projects.

All development indexes show Balochistan as the least developed of Pakistan's four provinces.

Nawab Bugti was killed last year

In 2000, the nationalists launched armed attacks to press for greater provincial autonomy. Pakistan's army replied with a massive military operation in the province four years later.

Over the next two years, hundreds of people were killed in clashes between the rebels and security forces.

Hundreds of thousands fled the area as fighting worsened.

The insurgency came to a climax in August 2006 when army troops surrounded several Baloch rebel leaders.

This included Mir Balaach Marri and veteran politician and former provincial governor Sardar Akbar Khan Bugti.

While Mr Balaach managed to escape along with several of his comrades, Nawab Bugti was killed. The clash also claimed the lives of dozens of army officers.

After that most rebels leaders are thought to have gone into exile in neighbouring Afghanistan.

But they continued to conduct raids into the region. In recent days, these had increased.

But observers say the uprising could now be in trouble with the rebels' operational leader dead.

First Bugti now a Marri. We are definitely moving towards another partition. And thank God this time it will be our army again which will be responsible for it

The Marris always were like that. There's another 49 Baloch tribes that don't agree with them.

as 90 % Balochi people do not support BLA nor such Baloch tribal leaders who are involved in terrorism in Balochistan.
out of scores of Baloch Tribal leaders few are trouble makers and these are not the voice of common Balochs but of their own intrests.

"Some of his comrades informed me he had been martyred," he told the BBC.

Martyred my foot. Idar her bc utth kar shaheed bun jata ha.

"I cannot disclose the location as it would further threaten the lives of those with him.

If he knows the location why cant he be just picked up by the intelligence agencies and beaten until he spills it out.

These news reports should also mention that one of the primary reasons behind the "lack of development" in Baluchistan is the Sardari system these "rebels" (scions of Sardars) have maintained. They claim that "Baluchistan's resources are being looted", when the truth is that they simply want more for their own pockets, as can be seen from the lack of development in the areas under the Sardari system.

What did Bugti do with all the gas royalties he received? He turned his territory into a fiefdom, had his own jails, persecuted members of his own clan that disagreed with him. Where was all the development from the Gas royalties he was cornering?

god going for the pakistani army if this was an SF mission then we are really awsome at this now we should send the SF into swat and clean the garbage out for good.

Guess what our very own
Benazir Bhutto met the father of Balach Marri last night.

There is another dimension to the killing.
President said when asked during a programme last night on TV about the killing of Balach.
There is sworn enemity between Bugi and Marri Tribes and as some reports said that terrorist Brahamdas Bugti who is currently hidding and being sheltered and funded by India was also in Afghanistan as well as Balach so it could be that he was killed due to intra-tribe enemity

Killing of Balaach can be result of inter-factional differences: IG-FC

QUETTA, Nov 23 (APP): Inspector General Frontier Corps (FC) Balochistan Major General Salim Nawaz on Friday denied any operation in Balochistan and said that the killing of Balaach Marri can be result of inter-factional feuds.
In a statement issued here he said that the incident has occurred inside Afghan territory adding that time and again reports confirmed the presence of both Balaach and Brahmdagh in Afghanistan from where they led insurgency in Balochistan.
The statement claimed that differences had appeared between Bugti and Marri tribes during 1970 operation. Moreover, Balaach had left Nawab Bugti alone amid the clashes taking place between Nawab Bugti and Security forces. These differences went further when Balaach left Nawab Bugti in a cave where he was killed in an operation in 2006.
He said that the family of Balaach Marri is aware of the
fatal differences existing between Brahmdagh and Balaach.
IG-FC asserted that the silence of Brahmdagh has not only concealed the real situation but also proves that Balaach was killed
inside Afghanistan.

Good riddance under what ever circumstances - there should be no compromise with terrorists.

Is there any possibility that we might have exacerbated the situation between these tribes.

Operation against BLA in Karachi soon* Around 50 BLA activists hiding in Baloch, Pathan-dominated areas

By Faraz Khan

KARACHI: The law enforcement agencies are preparing to launch an operation, perhaps within a week, against the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) in Karachi, especially Malir.

“We haven’t received any orders from anyone yet,” said Karachi chief of police Azhar Ali Farooqui. “But the Karachi police are dealing with the BLA activists themselves now.”

Farooqui confirmed their presence in the city and that they were suspected of involvement in attacks on policemen and police stations.

50 activists: According to sources, around fifty activists are hiding in Baloch- and Pathan-dominated areas such as Patel Para, Jehangir Road, Dalmia and Gosht market, Muslimabad, Malir City 15. It is believed that they arrived after the latest operation in their province. Saddiq Baloch, Ubaid Marri and Deen Bux Khair, are the main BLA suspects, who are believed to be supervising and heading activities in Karachi.

Some residents of Aasu Goth, Bakra Piri Goth believe that the BLA activists have made their dens in Muslimabad. “They come from other areas are try to terrorise us with aerial firing,” claimed Bakra Piri resident Kashif. On Wednesday, after the news of Balaach Marri’s killing there were reports of intense aerial firing from Malir.
Bin Qasim Town Police Officer Latif Siddiqui said that some activists had rioted Wednesday night but were dispersed by the police peacefully. Heavy contingents of police have already been deployed around the town.

Residents have been interviewed by secret agencies that have been gathering evidence. “A joint operation by the district police and rangers will be launched after orders are received within a week,” sources claimed.

If they know all this then why are they publishing this in the newspapers and not taking action. This seems a bit odd to me.

Lahori, how can you support a terrorist who WANTS to split the country.

Tell me why shouldn't we kill people who want to split the country. The people who want to split the country are at fault not the army.

For lahori and others of his ilk, only those are at fault who are against his beloved "leader".

Did you not know, the PML-N does not go out and solicit votes to advance its "agenda for change" for Pakistan's sake - they only do so for their "beloved leader's" sake.

Pakistan is not going towards another split. The circumstances of 1971 were different and present situation is different. With the elimination of anti state forces Pakistan is moving towards stabilization. One should understand that it is very important that all parts of the country should be under the control of the federal or provincial government. We cannot afford to have areas where writ of the government is challenged. Tribal areas, Northern Areas and all other troublesome areas should be brought under the control of government.
