Senior BJP leader, Murli Manohar Joshi today said his party strongly opposed West Bengal Government's decision on ten per cent reservation for Muslims in jobs.
"West Bengal Government's decision on Muslim reservation is unacceptable. We shall oppose it tooth and nail. Reservation on religious line is unconstitutional too," Joshi told a rally at Ashighar, 45 km from here.

"We are opposed to any reservation either on religion or on castes. Reservation should be given to the poorest of the poor irrespective of caste and religion," Joshi said.

Apparently with an eye on elections in the state, West Bengal government last year in February announced 10 per cent job reservation for Muslims under the OBC category.

Referring to the political situation of the state, Joshi said both the ruling and opposition parties had resorted to politics of violence. "It is unfortunate that poor farmers are killed in the state," he said without mentioning the January 7 Netai village massacre.

Joshi said the 35-year rule of Left Front government had pulled down Bengal to the nadir of non-performance. "It is a shame for the Marxists that they have thrown once thriving Bengal to out of the development map of the country."

About price rise, he said, it was not fair for Trinamool Congress chief to remain quiet on price rise when she was an important ally of UPA-II.

Turning to Congress, Joshi said, the party had become a storehouse of corruption. "Shamelessly they defend the loot of public money in several sectors. And the perpetrators are allowed to go scot free," he said.

So now Muslims would eat into the quota reserved for OBC category.Great going west Bengal.:hitwall:

This is Pathetic ..these reservation quotas should be removed altogether.

Giving reservations to Muslims alone is wrong and un-necessary. Reservation should be based on exactly what joshi said "Reservation should be given to the poorest of the poor irrespective of caste and religion". Anything else is unfair and stupid.

Now preference for job will be given on the basis of religion not merit. Shame on Bengal Govt.

Everybody should be given equal opportunities(ie free standardized education for all) not selective preferential treatments be it rich or poor , SC or ST, Hindu or Muslim .

i think scheduled tribes (adivasi) need some kind of special consideration..i agree with the rest.

Well let BJP come up with a positive suggestion to improve Muslim representation in Jobs in the government. Most of which are reserved to SC/ST and OBC categories are lets be honest taken by Hindus.
And Sachar committee has shown that W. Bengal muslims have probably the lowest share of jobs compared to their population in any other state. So as a temporary stop gap measure this would be possibly the best solution.

And by the way, the W. Bengal proposal excludes the creamy layer by excluding those families that earn income of Rs 4.5 lakh per annum or more. An economic condition that Joshi seems to be unaware of in the W. Bengal proposal.

Also article 16(4) usually cited to insist on equality for jobs and education irrespective of caste/religion e.t.c. also says “Nothing in this article shall prevent the State from making any provision for the reservation of appointments or posts in favour of any backward class of citizens which, in the opinion of the State, is not adequately represented in the services under the State”

We all support no quotas except on economic basis, but until that happens something has to be done to give all communities a level playing field because to have India progress all communities have to progress.

The basis of Reservation according to Dr.Ambedkar is to uplift the downtrodden castes and by unanimous consensus among members here, casteism is present in only Hinduism.

So this is just a cheap,communal gimmick for the Muslim vote by the desperate commies since they are getting to realize they are fast loosing their iron grip over WB.

You are saying this on the assumption that Muslims have been prevented,discriminated by the other communities from gaining entry into government jobs which was the case with the SC,ST. They (Muslims) did not get adequate representation because they lagged behind in education than other communities.

The assumption itself is grossly wrong. If this is not communalism and vote bank politics, I wonder what is ?

If the government is sincere let it give reservation in educational institutionsand improve the literacy among Muslims , not in jobs directly to under-qualified personnel just because they happen to be from one religion.

@bhagathsingh
y do u think ST needs reservtions??
if the present system is abolished nd reservations r based on economy , then they would automaticaly come under the reservtn catogary.
I dont think any person in this world should get preference just because he was born a hindu, muslim, dalit, or ST.
ECONOMIC RESERVATIONS R THE WAY FORWARD
joshi here is damn right.

There can a huge debate why Muslims who had been the ruling class before 200years ago, are so backward in development indices in WB or rest of the india .

Muslims are never barred from actively taking pat in the nation's politics and internal affairs. Moreover, there is no discrimination as you go south (eg.Kerala). In fact a lot of Muslims are uber rich. Its really not fair giving out reservations based on religion.

you don't need religion based representation on jobs..religion has nothing to do with job, poverty or power.
it is shameful to ask religious quota in everything including police and army.let religion be a personal matter..

@karthic sree
when were the lower cast people prevented or discriminated against frm entering GOVT jobs??
i really dont find a logical reason 4 present reservation systems.
