A BJP leader who unsuccessfully contested the recent Delhi Assembly elections from Shakur Basti has been booked for allegedly molesting and sexually assaulting a woman while she was attached with an institute here, police said on Wednesday.

According to police, SC Vats, who is chairman of an institute in the Pitampura area of north-west Delhi, has been booked under Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 376 (rape) of IPC.

In her complaint lodged at Maurya Enclave police station on January 28, the 33-year-old victim has alleged that Vats raped her on several occasions while she was working at the institute.She also told police that the BJP leader allegedly used to pass remarks at her and threatened her with dire consequences if she told anyone about the assault.

The complainant said she quit her job in May, 2014, due to the continuous assaults and harassment by Vats. “Police have registered a case against Vats and further investigation is on,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (north-west), N Gananasambandan. Vats, who was in Congress for several years, joined BJP in December last year and contested the recently-concluded elections from the Shakur Basti constituency. He was defeated by Aam Aadmi Party leader Satyendra Jain.

Well over 90% of rapes are never reported in India. Also, Western definitions of rape are more widely defined.

For example, spousal rape is not recognized as rape in India. Rape by school mates are considered "boys having a good time being boys."

India's rape problem is incredibly severe. What other country repeatedly makes headlines around the world for gang raping foreign tourists? Only India does.

Maybe because more rapes are reported, but true many men here mostly from bad backgrounds or some from Bad Rich backgrounds cause all such mess.

Also, it's not considered rape if a higher caste man rapes a lower caste girl. Such inter-caste rapes are almost never reported.

There is no other way around this fact: India is by far one of the most fucked up places for women.

I replied to my friend from USA who was sarcastic on Incredible India :p

It's Pakistan Defence Forum ..... India is the big bad wolf. everything from PTSD to rapes is super imposed on all Indians. Nothing new and nothing wrong from Pakistani point of view. People who have seen India from up close knows there are lots of short comings in India but still there are up coming opportunities for new entrepreneurs.
