BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to abolish subsidies for meat exporters as a "first step" towards ban on cow meat export.

In a letter to Narendra Modi, Swamy said the subsidies given to cow meat exporters are extended out of taxpayers' money "and millions of such taxpayers are hurt when their money is given by way of subsidy to meat exporters."

He urged the Prime Minister to direct authorities to abolish subsidies to meat sector immediately "as a first step towards eventual banning of cow meat export".

Swamy said while Maharashtra and a few other states have banned cow slaughter, now there is a need to withdraw the 13 types of subsidies extended to the exporters which are administered through Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA).

"These subsidies thus encourage cow meat exports from those states which have not banned cow slaughter and thus crores of rupees of the nation go to the pockets of meat exporters by way of these subsidies," he said.

Swamy pointed out that meat exports started in 1992 and have reached 15 lakh MT in terms of quantity and over Rs 30,000 crore in terms of value.

"In your 2014 election speeches you correctly referred to meat exports as pink revolution of the earlier government and said it should be banned," he said. The receipt of his letter was personally acknowledged by Modi.

Excellent move. Instead of bans, economic penalties can be made to work better. Stealthy and effective.

Actually this step would increase the livestock within India and if for one year meat exports are halted then it would directly effect International meat business which would increase the meat prices on International markets.

actually the process is more like banning meat completely. .. slowly they are pulling out their agenda.... i mean what we eat is our personal choice. .. but banning 8 days for a random festival. .. and banning bakr Eid holidays sounds sort of arrogant ..... and again vinayaka chavithi... if you are vegetarian doesn't mean everyone should follow your individual preferences.. ... someone always says excellent in every stupid statement made by some hardcore. ...

You have busted our secret plan. :(

Well slowly and steadily we have to remove subsidies out of every area, so its a good start.
But at the same time they would have to plan about what do with excess of life stocks that will chew away anything that remains green on already heavily pressurized Indian agricultural land.

Against subsidy any any form why should Tax money be used to facilitate private business unless of course its of National Interest type.

What Agenda ? Cattle herders are not getting International prices and on that Government is working to do the buying and selling in which the prices are good for cattle herders as well as the revenues be collected with a system.

Already GoI is working for the food processing units which can be helpful to improve not only the quality but even increase dairy markets.

If for one year , we Indians adopt beef ban and think about the country then we can increase more employment.
