Births in China Fall to Lowest Level in Nearly Six Decades

Chinese women breed with Africans in Guangzhou.

The relationship with Africa that China has so aggressively courted for economic gain - 2012 saw a record US$198 billion of trade between the pair - is producing an unexpected return: the mainland's first mixed-race generation with blood from a distant continent and the right to be Chinese.

"CHOCOLATE CITY" OR "Little Africa", as it has been dubbed by the Chinese press, is a district of Guangzhou that is home to between 20,000 and 200,000, mostly male, African migrants (calculations vary wildly due to the itinerant nature of many traders and the thousands who overstay their visas).

Despite their eligibility, most African grooms in Guangzhou marry Chinese economic migrants whose disapproving families reside far from the city. In business terms, it is the ideal merger, says Lin, who believes most Afro-Chinese marriages are a cynical play for better business.
"Opening a shop is very difficult for foreigners," she says. "You need a Chinese passport or the landlord will ask for a bribe. A Chinese wife can speak to suppliers. It's useful to have a Chinese partner.
"Many Chinese women want to marry Africans because they are from poor rural areas, often Hunan or Hubei provinces. Marrying a foreigner is a way to upgrade their social status, because the Africans have money."
Instead of taking a factory job, a Chinese woman who marries an African man often becomes head of his wholesale shop, should he open one, and a key player in his export business.

But a WikiLeaks cable from 2008 revealed that the central government is troubled by the phenomenon, and quietly funded covert research into Africans in Guangzhou, specifically their impact on crime, underground religion and missed tax revenue.

Signs of a developed country. Good job China.
It's actually one of the bad aspects of a developed country, and can have devastating consequences. So no, not good job.

If China doesn't want to have a demographic crisis on its hands (where old people outnumber young/working class people), then it needs to increase its young population immediately, whether through birth, or immigration.

.
Sign of a collapsing civilization

If they don't change, China is going down the Japanese path of troubles. By the time China is #1 in GDP, US would catch up again because China's aging population is not contributing much to GDP.

Having a dying population is worse than pro-Mao times, families and kids are vital to any civilization.

Even if China scraps the 2 child policy, China is expected for a hard landing. And immigration would only make things worse. China is a homogeneous society and that should be more important than being #1 in GDP. Any families and any kids are not vital for civilization. You import tribes and barbarians who never had civilization and/or who have behaved uncivilized, and that includes many in the West, China would change for the worse.

You want China to be livable, not some violent place where the native Chinese are fearful of their lives if they go out into the streets.

The communist party needs to either collide with iceberg in continuing the restrictions on births or steer away and allow more kids for their citizens.

Mass immigration would sink the ship. They are going to want representation in the CCP and their own Chairman and even more. That is the end of China.

Don't worry about GDP, worry about your own Chinese people and identity.

while dropping population for better resource share looks lucrative, the future results mabye devastating, have seen it myself while during my stay in the UK, entire city made up of old people and young people are now where to be seen.

regards

Lifting the one child policy will not do anything. There is no incentive to have children in modern society in China, as it is a huge money and time sink. What the government needs to do is put incentives in place to boost birth rate.

- Public housing options for those with children
- Tax incentives for parents
- Impose additional taxation on people age 40 and above without children

.
Its actually a good sign,,,now they just need to stabilise it.
as far as people saying doom n gloom,,,,relax, they can always import cheap labour from countries breeding like cockroaches,,,as arabs do n treat them like slaves(i can bet tht still ppl from breeding countries wud line up unashamedly.
Lets see,,what happens in 3-5 decades,,,,will this decrease impact China,,if it does, thn to what extent.
N Vice versa,,what happens to countries in the neighbourhood who r breeding nonstop,,,lets see how they manage in the decades to come.

The French exemple is a particular one in Western Europe... The country higher "Fertility rate" is because of multiple factors... Like Social Welfare... Religious "Roots"... And anything "child related"... The Family nucleus is a central part in French Society.
Yes, at a certain period of time around the 80s to end of 90s, Fertility rate was much much higher among newly Immigrated pop... But Since the Beginning of the new century and mostly with the Second/third gen... Fertility rate is around the same among everyone... A Muslim will not make in average more kids than a Christian and vice versa... Even non-religious ppl are in average with their religious peers...

Excellent news for the United States in the long term great power competition between the US and China.

By mid to late century China will be an old and dying country with a much lower growth rate. Today China is 4 times the size of the US population. By 2100 it will likely only be twice the size and old at that. Even if China were to surpass US GDP in the short term, it’s likely the US will surpass China again in the second half of the century. The long term advantage remains with the United States.
