The 119th birth anniversary of Field Marshall K.M. Cariappa was celebrated in the city on Sunday.

Held under the auspices of Kodava Samaj, the members gathered at the Metropole Circle and garlanded the bust of the Field Marshal. MLAs M.K. Somashekar, Vasu and others participated and Maj. Gen. (Retd.) C.K. Karumbaya, addressed the gathering.

In response to the demand for a life-size statue of the Field Marshal, Mr. Vasu said that he would seek approval from the government once the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) passes a resolution regarding the same.

At Madikeri, Air Marshal (Retd.) K.M. Cariappa inaugurated the celebrations held in association with the Kodagu District Administration and the zilla panchayat. He urged the youth of the country to emulate the discipline and work culture of Field Marshal Cariappa to help in national reconstruction. Rich tributes were paid to the contribution of Field Marshal Cariappa in various walks of life and his role in strengthening the Indian Army.

Former Minister M.C. Nanaiah described the Field Marshal as a jewel and regretted the delay in conferring the Bharat Ratna to him. Other speakers on the occasion wanted his birth anniversary to be celebrated in Gonikoppa and other places as well.

A procession was taken out on the occasion, led by the police and the military band, followed by folk troupes depicting the rich culture of Kodagu.
