Former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto names the 16-year-old son of Usama Bin Laden as the leader of one of four gangs of “designated assassins” sent to kill her in a posthumous autobiography excerpted in The Times of London on Sunday.

Bhutto, who was assassinated as she left a rally in Rawalpindi in December, revealed she was warned by both President Pervez Musharraf and a “friendly Muslim government” that Hamza Bin Laden was planning her murder.

The naming of Bin Laden’s teenage son appears to bolster intelligence claims that Hamza is being groomed as a future leader of Al Qaeda.

In her new autobiography, Bhutto writes: “I was told by both the Musharraf regime and the foreign Muslim government that four suicide bomber squads would attempt to kill me. These included, the reports said, the squads sent by the Taliban warlord Baitullah Mehsud; Hamza Bin Laden, a son of Osama Bin Laden; Red Mosque militants; and a Karachi-based militant group.”

Last September Hamza was described in reports as a senior Al Qaeda leader who had been waging jihad in the lawless tribal areas along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border.

Hamza Bin Laden, others were planning to kill me: Benazir

ISLAMABAD: In a posthumous autobiography excerpted published in a UK-based newspaper, Benazir Bhutto has named the 16-year-old son of Osama Bin Laden as the leader of one of four gangs of “designated assassins” sent to kill her. The former prime minister, who was assassinated as she left a rally in Rawalpindi in December, reveals she was warned by both President Pervez Musharraf and a “friendly Muslim government” that Hamza Bin Laden was planning her murder. The naming of Bin Laden’s teenage son appears to bolster intelligence claims that Hamza is being groomed as a future leader of Al-Qaeda. In her new autobiography, Bhutto writes: “I was told by both the Musharraf regime and the foreign Muslim government that four suicide bomber squads would attempt to kill me. These included, the reports said, the squads sent by the Taliban warlord Baitullah Mehsud; Hamza Bin Laden, a son of Osama Bin Laden; Red Mosque militants; and a Karachi-based militant group.” Little has been heard of Hamza since he featured in a joint Taliban and Al-Qaeda video, shot in 2001, of a militant attack on a Pakistan army camp in South Waziristan, a militant stronghold near the Afghan border. Last September Hamza was described in reports as a senior Al-Qaeda leader who had been waging jihad in the lawless tribal areas along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Bhutto’s book also describes how a suicide bomb attack on her motorcade in Karachi when she returned home last October may have been carried out by a would-be assassin who lined the clothes of a toddler with plastic explosive to turn the child into a bomb. She says a man gestured to her to hold the child, before trying to hand it to police in a nearby van, which exploded soon afterwards.

Bhutto book says she had cell numbers of assassins

By Michelle Nichols

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto returned home knowing the names and cell phone numbers of her possible assassins, she wrote in a book finished just days before her murder at a December election rally.

Bhutto wrote in "Reconciliation: Islam, Democracy and the West," to be released worldwide on Tuesday, that Pakistani officials told her four suicide bomber squads had been sent by Taliban warlord Baitullah Mehsud, Osama bin Laden's son Hamza, and two militant groups to kill her.

"I had actually received from a sympathetic Muslim foreign government the names and cell numbers of designated assassins," said Bhutto, who accused Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf of not doing enough to protect her or investigate the threats.

Bhutto, 54, who twice served as prime minister of Pakistan, said she sent a letter to Musharraf before returning to her homeland in October in which she identified people in the Pakistani intelligence service whom she said would be responsible for her assassination.

"I told him if I was assassinated by the militants it would be due to the sympathizers of the militants in his regime, who I suspected wanted to eliminate me and remove the threat I posed to their grip on power," Bhutto wrote in the 318-page book published by News Corp's HarperCollins.

Bhutto survived a bomb attack -- one of the deadliest in Pakistan's history, killing at least 139 people -- when she returned in October after an eight-year exile.

But she was killed after a bomb and gun attack at the end of a Dec. 27 rally ahead of planned Jan. 8 national elections. The polls are now due Feb. 18.

'I WANTED TO REASSURE THEM'

"When I returned, I did not know whether I would live or die," wrote the mother of three. "I said farewell to my children, husband, mother, staff, friends and family not knowing whether I would ever see their faces again.

"I wanted to reassure them, but I also told them, 'Remember: God gives life, and God takes life. I will be safe until my time is up,'" said Bhutto, whose father, Pakistan's first popularly elected prime minister, was hanged by the military in the late 1970s.

Musharraf's government blamed al Qaeda for killing Bhutto, a staunch supporter of the U.S.-led campaign against Islamist militancy, but many Pakistanis suspect her other enemies, perhaps from within shadowy security agencies, were involved.

After the first attempt on her life, Bhutto wrote that "a cover-up seemed to be under way from the very first moments of the attack" that she said was "clearly meant to appear to be an al Qaeda-style suicide attack."

"In Pakistan things are almost never as they seem. There are always circles within circles, rarely straight lines. This was meant to look like the work of al Qaeda and the Taliban, and I do not doubt they were involved," she said.

"But the sophistication of the plan ... suggested a larger conspiracy. Elements from within the Pakistani intelligence service had actually created the Taliban in the 1980s, and certain elements sympathized with al Qaeda ideologically and theologically. Some had recruited or worked for it," she said.

Bhutto's widower, Asif Ali Zardari, has now become the de facto leader of his wife's Pakistan People's Party. Together with his son and two daughters, they wrote an afterword for Bhutto's book.

"This book is about everything that those who killed her could never understand: democracy, tolerance, rationality, hope, and, above all, the true message of Islam," they wrote. "Or maybe they did understand these things and feared them, and thus feared her. She was the fanatics' worst nightmare."

Hi,

No pun intended---but if she had the cell phone numbers---then did someone call those numbers and ask when and where and how the attacks be carried out---or was there a chance that the bombers could talk it out!!!

Friend you know the nature of this whole fiasco. We have been cursed with crooks and decoits as leaders. How can we expect anything honest from them. BBwas never honest in her dealings. She may have had information about the gangs out there to kill her. But such is the "Ghuroor"(for lack of a better word in English,)in her that she must have contacted her American friends and once reassured would have gone on thinking NO one can harm me bacause the Americans are supporting me. It is the level of base inteeligence that led to her stupidly breaching the security protocol and dying as a consequence. My only sadness is the loss of all the other poor people who again in their naivity attribute liberation and wealth with her rule not knowing that the only pockets that will get lined with gold would have been BBs and some of her cronies. What a sad state of affairs!!

Benazir’s book ‘Musharraf did nothing for my protection’

NEW YORK, Feb 12: “I had become aware that suicide squads might be sent from the North-West Frontier Province and Federally Administered Tribal Areas to try to assassinate me immediately on my return,” former prime minister Benazir Bhutto wrote in her book released on Tuesday in New York, London and Islamabad.

The book “Reconciliation: Islam, Democracy, and the West” was finished just two days before she was killed. Only her name appears on the cover, although a “reader’s note” by her long-time friend and adviser, Washington political consultant and lobbyist Mark A. Siegel, indicates that he collaborated on the manuscript.

“I had actually received from a sympathetic Muslim foreign government, the names and cellphone numbers of designated assassins,” Ms Bhutto, who was assassinated on December 27 while leaving an election rally in Rawalpindi, wrote. President Musharraf did nothing to ensure her safety and security.

“Gen Musharraf’s regime knew of the specific threats against me, including the names and numbers of those who planned to kill me. It also knew the names of others, including those in his own inner circle and in his party, who we believed were conspiring,” Ms Bhutto wrote in the book.

The most interesting part of Ms Bhutto’s book is her issue with Samuel Huntington who wrote in his book “Clash of Civilisations” that a confrontation between the “West and militant Islam” was inevitable after the Cold War was resolved. Historical inevitability always is a dicey prospect, but Ms Bhutto goes well beyond the typical responses by Muslim political leaders. She argues that a substantial part of the work to be done to avoid such a clash must occur in the Islamic world, where a case needs to be made forcefully for more tolerant strains of Islam that are friendly to modernism and civil society. It says something about the state of affairs in the Islamic world that this is a daring, even singular, position for a political leader to take.

Ms Bhutto asserts in the book that the West cannot treat conflict with the Islamic world as inevitable. Like every form of hopelessness, that’s a destructive -- and self-defeating -- idea. It will take more than simple goodwill and a talismanic invocation of “democracy” to make it otherwise, however. There is a place to begin the discussion, however. It’s with an observation and question.

According to Ms Bhutto, the first assassination bid on her on October 18 after her return to Pakistan from Dubai was an Al Qaeda-style suicide attack.

“It appeared to be an Al Qaeda-style suicide attack, more Muslim-against-Muslim violence linked to the so-called struggle between theology and democracy,” Ms Bhutto said.
