Bihar cops capture top Maoists
PATNA: In a major anti-extremism breakthrough, Bihar's Special Task Force (STF) have captured seven Maoists, including three top guns, Varanasi Subramanian, Bijay Kumar Arya and Pulendu Shekhar who are said to be members of the CPI (Maoist)'s central committee.
It is probably for the first time that three central committee members of the outlawed outfit were nabbed in one police operation, police said and added the central committee members are top functionaries who take policy decisions for the rebel group.
The seven Maoists were detained on Friday following intelligence inputs on suspicious movement of a group of people in Katihar district's Barsoi village. IG (operations) K S Dwivedi said STF SP Sudhir Kumar Singh and DSP Gopal Paswan rushed to the spot and intercepted the group. Asked for identity, they gave out fictitious names with a few of them speaking chaste English. The policemen, however, got an inkling of their Maoist links following recovery of a pen drive and Naxal literature from their possession.
While the seven suspects were ordered to be brought to Patna, IG Dwivedi contacted Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh police. Their real identity could be ascertained only after police teams from the two states reached the Bihar capital on Saturday morning. "We arrested them after they gave out their real names," Dwivedi told TOI.
Police said Subramaniam (58) alias Srikant alias Sukant alias Vimal is son of a lawyer and an M. Com and LLB from Andhra University. A native of Andhra's Prakasam district, he has been on the CPI (Maoist)'s central committee since 2001 and helmed the outfit's international cell ever since the arrest of Kobad Gandhi, also a central committee member, from Andhra in 2009.
Vijay Kumar Arya alias Jaspalji alias Amar, 50, is an MA from Bihar's Magadh University and hails from Karma village in the state's Gaya district. He is in charge of the outfit's all-India SUCOMO (subcommittee of mass organization), police said.
Pulendu Shekhar Muherjee alias Saheb alias Jhantu alias Joyda, 69, belongs to Jadavpur police station area of West Bengal. He is secretary of the outfit's eastern regional bureau and has also been looking after the party activities in Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. He is wanted in at least ten cases in Chhattisgarh, police said.
The Andhra government had announced a cash reward of Rs 12 lakh on Subramaniam's head while Arya carried a reward of Rs 3 lakh, announced by the Bihar government, on his head.
The others were identified by police as Abhimanyu alias Umesh Yadav alias Rajendra (47), secretary of the UU (Uttar Bihar-Uttar Pradesh) regional bureau who hails from Kursela in Katihar; Nokhe Lal Chowdhary alias Suraj alias Bakraf (30), a member of the eastern zonal committee; and Shyamji Rishi, a member of the north Bihar eastern zonal committee. Suraj and Shyamji are natives of Katihar's Barsoi village. The cops also arrested Aniruddh Ravidas (47), who had given shelter to the six Maoists at his home in Barsoi.
They would be flown to Katihar for their production in a court there, the STF IG said and added the state police HQ has announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for the STF and Katihar policemen involved in the operation.
