BBC News - Bhutan PDP opposition party wins election

The opposition People's Democratic Party (PDP) has won the second-ever parliamentary election in Bhutan.

The PDP beat the ruling Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) party, which has strong links to the king.

The turnout was high at about 80%, said officials. The kingdom's struggling economy and ties with neighbouring India were key issues in the campaign.

The country has been a democracy since 2008, when the king voluntarily relinquished his absolute power.

The PDP won 32 of the country's 47 parliamentary seats, according to results posted on the official website of Bhutan's Election Commission.

The DPT, which won the last election in 2008, only secured 15 seats in Saturday's poll.

PDP leader Tshering Tobgay is likely to be named prime minister of the new government, the Associated Press news agency reports.

The PDP has criticised the government for a recent deterioration of ties with India, a key ally.

For decades, Bhutan has relied on its giant southern neighbour for much of its trade and foreign policy.

India's recent massive reduction of oil and gas subsidies for Bhutan has sparked speculation that this may be because of the Himalayan country's improving relations with China.

So that should be good news for India! :yay:

Historically Bhutan is a province of Tibet just like S Tibet and Sikkim. FYI, the Chinese haven't forgotten history.

Who are you to talk on behalf of Chinese??

Who the hell are Han Chinese to talk about Tibet?

Han Chinese and China is from the regions around Beijing river, Indians only know Tibetans,Bhutanese and Sikkimese nothing more.

Han Chinese has nothing to do with Tibet, Xinjiang or any other Himalayan kingdoms.

But as matter of fact, we have something to do with Brahmaputra  when a nation is depend on us for water, we will have a good bargain in this region. India is just an geographical expression, with water will unglue of what British empire put all togheter in India ;)

Both the parties are pro India and Bhutan is like another state of India.

lol India was trying to influence Bhutan democratie election by annoncing the oil cut in order to overthrown the party in power, now you got what you want but also you have created a wound in Bhutan history, when the time they raise against against India, you don't have this kind of opportunity again.

First take care of China since Tibet and Xinjiang are not stable, then you can talk about the other giant in Asia, India.

Why bother? we have the water to take care of India automatically, Indians are living in constant fear that we will take water away anytime...we have aready achieve our victorious goal, we rather inflict India with long suffering than short pain., take away the water right now is easy but we won't have any leverage against India in the future.

Talk about India stability, go ask maoist and UFLA  the time to balkanize India is close, our water will be certainly a great force of nature for this kind of job. ->be with us or against us mean no water, I'm pretty sure who want to survive will fight for our cause :azn:
