General Director of the "Uralvagonzavod" corporation Oleg Sienko and the CEO of the Indian company Bharat Forge Kalyani of the Kalyani Group signed a memorandum of understanding providing for the establishment of the co-production of self-propelled artillery units (SAU) in India. It's not clear if the deal will bring the Russian gun back into contention for supplying SP 155mm howitzers to India under its artillery modernization program. [source]

The ET reported on July 1, 2016 that MoD had wrapped price negotiations with L&T for purchase of 100 guns, earmarked for deployment along India's border with Pakistan.

A contract has been finalized and will be forwarded for approval to the Cabinet Committee on Security.

The value of the contract - Rs 4,500-crore - makes it the largest to be entrusted to the industry.

L&T, along with its technology partner Samsung, will produce the guns in India at L&T's Strategic Systems Complex at Talegaon near Pune with close to 50% indigenous content.

The Indian Express reported on January 11, 2016 that MoD on December 22, 2015 opened the price bid of L&T, the only gun to qualify in the trials. Price negotiations with L&T will commence this month and are likely to be concluded in this financial year. The deal for 100 guns is estimated to cost between Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,000 crore. The contract will also have a follow-up option clause of 50 additional K9 Vajra-T guns.

The first 10 guns are to be supplied by L&T to the Army within 18 months of signing, with the balance 90 guns to be supplied in the next two years.

Russia's "Uralvagonzavod" corporation and India's Kalyani Group will co-produce self-propelled artillery units in India.

"Our Indian partners have extensive experience in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence. We have extensive experience and expertise as part of creation of self-propelled artillery. We plan to gradually transfer the documentation as part of the Make in India program to jointly produce the installation "- said General Director of Uralvagonzavod. He also noted that the assembly line will be the first stage of cooperation to create the SAU, whose production is now carried out on the "Uraltransmash" (part of "Uralvagonzavod" corporation).

The Russian Industry and Trade Minister Denis Manturov and his Indian colleague Nirmala Sitharaman were present during the signing of the document. Technical cooperation between the two countries was planned to be developed in the framework of the Make in India program, providing for the creation of modern industries in India for various military and civilian equipment.

The Russian 2S19 self-propelled guns "MSTA-S" production "Uraltransmash" and South Korean K9 Thunder Samsung Techwin Company are competing as part of the ongoing tender for the purchase of self-propelled artillery of the Armed Forces of India. In total, India intends to spend $ 2.4 billion for the purchase of 814 artillery systems in the next 10 years, 100 of which will be purchased abroad (with 50 of them assembled in India), and the rest are to be manufactured in India.

Msta was rejected in trial stage, The only SPG now in service is older 2s1 Gvozdika - 122 mm.

And at least 2 Regt of 130 mm Catapult.

Maybe this deal is for Militaries, other than India.

2S19M1- 155/52 Varient of Msta S did.... but it seems they are vying for a newer gun, 2S35 "Koalitsiya-SV", a replacement for MstaS in Russian Land Forces unveiled last victory day parade.

Hmm.. Ok.. Even then this should not be inducted. If K-9 cant fulfill the requirement, Bheem can be revived.

Guys u need to understand our strategy behind make in India .. which is obviously to propell our own weapon systems.

I wonder what is the use of Russian artillery when we are about get tot on K9 south Korean

I think it's regardless of what we buy this deal is to export guns to other Asian countries with Indian Russian influence. Think about selling these guns to SCS countries especially Vietnam . Which more or less has similar weapon systems of India from sub to aircraft. With common enemy

But on otherside of view . We could split 400+400 for two different guns while getting tot on both Russian and South Korean technology. It's all about catching up with the gab left for the last decade with China .

U need to check what K9 are capable of and why they got selected

They did. Confusing development.

Bharat Forge has their hands in so many artillery projects it's ridiculous.
The one I was actually looking forward was the Garuda 105mm Ultra light. That to me was the one which we would use more often. Also no info on the Beas upgrade of the m46.
