Well, nuclear reactor is not a nuclear bomb which many people comprehend. Still a radiation danger is there but nobody going to die out of BLAST. Nuclear technology is evolving very fast and the third generation reactors are very very safe. A US company has to meet all the regulation of USA to meet its safety standard an I am pretty confident that we will be just fine.
It seems a nuclear reactor is safe until it becomes unsafe. Think of Fukushima in japan. Anorther nine months will be needed to fix the problem. I am not a pessimist, but an extra-ordinary caution is needed when designing a reactor. Temperature in a reactor must be kept low by providing cold water. In case of Fukushima, the main, subsidiary as well as the generator electric connections were severed.
These alternative power sources were all connected to the pumps that pump up cold water. But, in time of need all these did not function. People are not allowed to venture inside a radious of 30 km of the plant. So, we must be extra careful. However, i must also say that after Fukushima, the designers will design the future plants as per new safety requirements to be set by IAEA.
