‘Beware bearded terrorists,’ Chinese posters warn

At some point, China will need to realize -- as I wrote above -- that matching the West and protecting Chinese interests is not just about matching their guns and checkbooks, but also their propaganda machine.

Impractical in the short or medium term. Only in the long term will that be possible, and then only in very limited amounts.

Our Movies/TV are not in English, and even if we launch dedicated English language channels (we actually have several news channels with English versions already), who outside China would consider them more reliable than established sources?

We aren't going to win the global media war anytime soon, even in the long term the gains we would make would be minor.

What we need to do is protect ourselves first, by controlling the domestic market. Then maybe start buying up overseas media channels, and using our enormous consumer base to pressure others into moderating their coverage (or face being cut off from our consumers).

And we need to accumulate hard power, namely economic and military power. America can turn the world against Russia, but Russia's military strength means they can hold their own, within their own borders. Sovereignty matters the most.

As for negative coverage of Muslims, the Islamic world combined has immense geopolitical power and influence, far more than China I would say. All you need to do is reach a degree of political unity, and you could "protect" yourselves in the same way we protect ourselves.

And maybe together we might even be able to provide a credible and alternative narrative to the world. No doubt the Chinese leaders would love for such a thing to be possible, as it would effectively end the current uni-polar world system.

But from the way things are going now, that may be an impossible dream, as Muslims worldwide are being turned against China by blowing up small issues to such great proportions, that beards in Xinjiang seem more important than the millions who died (and continue to die) in Iraq after the American invasion.

I am sure @qamar1990 is a good chap, but you have and should have the final say on what you decide with respect to your country. You owe no one any explanation. Especially when this is just a silly cartoon and that too interpreted by al Arabiya! :D This is a non issue actually

I am sure there are thousands of cartoons with clean shaven men as villains.
i wasn't talking about the cartoon but the other stuff like forcing people to to fast ect

What many people here (Indians) don't understand is this isn't about Islam or Muslims but about terrorism and separatism. We have good relations with Pakistan because of a long history of shared interest that has turned into a much deeper relationship. Rather the Pakistani's are Muslims or not doesn't matter to us.

.
Very much so.

I would hope the Chinese authorities are smart enough to understand the wider issue at play here and make every effort to make it clear -- especially to the Chinese citizens -- that their fight is with extremists, not Islam or Muslims.

The fact that certain elements will try to portray this as China's fight against Islam means the Chinese authorities need to go the extra mile and defuse that perception.
Why?
Think about it. What would China lose if some Muslims feel China is anti-Muslim?
Would Saudi Arabia refuse to sell their oil to China? No
Would Iran refuse? No
Would any country in the world refuse China even if CCP declared tomorrow that they are officially anti Muslim? No

Then how does China lose even $1, if the Muslims of the world think of China as evil.

Brother, this has been discussed in the thread before. You can check it :-)
Cliff-notes are basically this : International media gives a negative 'spin' to any news coming out of China. You have to sift through the lies.

I don't know how that guy qamar is in America and ranting at China. Surely the deaths of over a million innocent Muslims in the Iraq war alone, funded by American citizens such as himself, is "relatively" worse than restrictions in one province of China?
.
bro shall we just ignore anything that clearly wrong??
we have to talk about at least am i wrong?
i know america fucked up big time with iraq and we hate bush for putting us in that war…
i don't decide where my tax money is spent sadly…. we don't choose to fund wars…. i even have doubts if we actually get to choose our leaders in america tbh because how can we be so sure that its not rigged or something..

China isn't anti Muslim. If the bombing and knive attacks had been done by buddhists or Christians there would have been the same response. Now i do believe that China's policies are counterproductive and should look into the grievences of the Uyghurs that are mainly economic and social. Banning something like fasting during Ramadan for certain people will only inflame the situation.

Of course, we should discuss it. But you were quick to dismiss the whole thing before sifting through the different view-points being presented. That's precisely what we have been pointing out that propaganda of this sort against China is to draw a wedge between Muslim countries and China. China has made alliances that are un-acceptable to certain people on the international front so they resort to such things

Also it should be obvious as to who benefits from all this;) (it's neither Muslim countries nor China) . We should practice discretion when hearing anything from the international propaganda machine regarding China

.
This has more to do with the depiction of a bearded man (Muslim in most cases) as an extremist, similar to the depiction of the burka as muslim symbolism that Europe is pushing to ban.
