Hyperion, search for Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film on wikipedia (can't post links)...Tons of great sci fi movies there.

Another great, great one which I forgot to mention is The Abyss... Fascinating story and the special effects are downright mindblowing for it's time (released in 1989).

I did like Sandra Bullock's acting, but the barking scene was a crime against humanity.
