Mission: Mercenary – Indian ‘Fans’ Paid to Greet Tom Cruise?

OB-QX013_icruis_G_20111207040147.jpg

Of the slew of Hollywood stars to have visited India, Tom Cruise – arguably the biggest name in the movie industry — was one of the most eagerly anticipated. So it wasn’t surprising that he was greeted by a mob of frenzied fans when he arrived at Mumbai Airport on Saturday as part of his promotional tour for the fourth film in the Mission: Impossible series. But the banner-waving welcome party might not have been as genuine as it looked.

According to reports, the 200 or so people gathered outside the airport weren’t simply there to catch a glimpse of Hollywood royalty – they were there to earn a quick buck. These “fans” were allegedly paid 150 rupees ($2.90) and given a free lunch in return for cheering the actor, who some didn’t even recognize.

“Tom kaun [who]? I don’t know who he is or what he does. We were told to come here by 1pm today and wait for a foreign VIP to come out of the airport gate and scream and shout when he came,” Network 18’s FirstPost.com website quoted a “junior artiste” as saying.

This “artiste” added that such arrangements were not uncommon. “We do this for television shows and other such events where crowds are required.”

A report in the Mumbai Mirror claimed that Mr. Cruise’s event managers had appointed an agency that “specialized in arranging crowds for celebrity events.” Noting that the time of Mr. Cruise’s arrival had not been made public (for real Indian fans), the report said crowd members were paid 200-400 rupees, depending on “experience” (yes, we were also unaware there was a career-ladder in this field.)

Wizcraft International Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., the organizers of Mr. Cruise’s trip, rejected the reports.

“Paid fans? The media will sensationalize anything and everything for attention,” a Wizcraft spokeswoman told India Real Time. “We are not aware of any such arrangement,” she said.

Viacom 18, the India distributors of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, declined to comment.

Ravi Sharma, director of Vibes Entertainment, an agency that specializes in celebrity events, said hiring crowds was “a rather routine affair.” He told IRT that the “hired motley” was paid depending on the “social stature of the celebrity and duration of the gathering.”

“A nominal sum of 150 rupees to 500 rupees is more than enough to make a student’s day,” Mr. Sharma said, adding that agencies maintain a network across schools and colleges to stage gatherings as speedily as possible. “A staged crowd is better behaved and easily controllable… Further, you won’t have to go through the trouble of driving them away once the celebrity leaves.”

Nevertheless, he was surprised about the fans allegedly hired to greet Mr. Cruise. “B-grade Bollywood actors are usually welcomed by paid fans. But for event organizers to put Tom Cruise in the same category – shocking.”

Truly embarrassing - Why the heck do they bother? What do they gain? By having Tom Cruise in their nation does that give their nation kudos? I think not! :azn:

BBC News - Tom Cruise India trip organisers deny hiring fans

Tom Cruise India trip organisers deny hiring fans

The organisers of Hollywood star Tom Cruise's recent visit to India have denied reports that they hired 200 fans to welcome the star at Mumbai airport.

A spokesman for Wizcraft said they were "not aware of this" and that the "information is incorrect".

Cruise arrived on Saturday for a special screening of his latest film, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.

Media said the "fans" were paid from $3.87 (£2.5) to $7.73 (£5). Cruise was at the airport less than 10 minutes.

The star waved at the cheering crowds and posed for photographs before being taken to his hotel.

'Special screening'
The Times of India newspaper said a few of the "fans" were not sure who they were welcoming, despite carrying placards reading, "We love Tom Cruise", "Tom - chak de India", and "Tom Cruises".

It said three girls who were among the most vocal members of the crowd did not even know what Cruise did.

"We're not certain, but 300 rupees for an hour outside the airport is not bad," the paper quoted one of them as saying.

A Wizcraft spokeswoman told the Wall St Journal's India Real Time that the story was "sensationalist", adding: "We are not aware of any such arrangement."

The Hollywood star came to India on a two-day visit at the weekend to promote the film ahead of its global release.

Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor, who also stars in the film, joined Cruise and 1,500 Indian fans in the suburb of Wadala on Sunday for the special screening.

"I wanted to come to India my whole life, so I am very excited," he told the Press Trust of India news agency.

He was accompanied on this promotional tour by his co-star in the film, Paula Patton.

The screening was attended by several Bollywood stars, including Sonam Kapoor, Abhishek Bachchan, Aamir Khan and Farhan Akhtar.

On Saturday Cruise visited the famous monument to love, the Taj Mahal in Agra.

The fourth instalment of the Mission Impossible films is directed by Brad Bird and will be released in India on 16 December

Probably you did not read the post. The money was paid by event management company to show off and generate a buzz(kind of marketing strategy).
And as one guy pointed out, paying students 150 rs to 500 rs is enough.
But event managers usually those who are less popular in bollywood have to do this.

People who watch Tom Cruise are not the type of crowd that will go to airport to greet and cheer him.

You probably did not read the article before posting.

. . . .
to be honest...Nothing wrong with spending money on making a guest feel good ;)
It was not fans who spent money, it was event management companies who have have obvious interest in creating news. They other way is to pay the news papers(which they probably did too)
If people knew tom cruise, they wont have to do this. But very few hollywood stars face any star craze here.

.
and here I was thinking about the fan which almost fell on Pawar when I clicked on this link.

Of course it happens in India, who in there right mind will go to Pakistan

and who in their right mind would pay people to cheer someone they dont even know who he is? Why go to the trouble? I cringe thinking what the hell is the point? Pretending lying and being something that your not? Madness.

As the saying goes, you don't need to be a graduate to imitate.....providing there is a logic.

Well pakistanis have to learn a lot about India then.
Here politicians arrange people to come to political rallies, and sometimes even pay for that.
There is an allegation some of the stone throwers in Kashmir were paid, same youth who later participated in BJP's yatra.

With respect - this has little to do with topic. Please dont bring Pakistan into this thread. It is clearly embarrassing to pay people to cheer someone they dont even know who he is. Pretending is not good to promote.
