Pakistans first greenfield civil aerodrome marks a new era in developing world-class aviation facilities in the country. The new Benazir Bhutto International Airports (BBIA) Passenger Terminal Building was designed by CPGairport for an initial capacity of 6.5 million passengers per annum. It employs environmentally sustainable design strategies such as daylighting and sun shading to reduce energy use as part of an intelligent envelope, together with an elongated, elevated driveway-length front portal.
The client the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority was interested in having an intelligent envelope design similar to that realized for Changi Airport Terminal 3 (T3). The design for BBIA is inspired by traditional Islamic patterns, and unlike T3, the intelligence factor is more substantially in the design, rather than expensive technology, which is not within its tight budget.
The Terminal Building has a modular design of co-located International and Domestic halls, with a centre pier extension to serve aircraft boarding gates. Daylight from the main roof skylights and the shaded facade glazing around the airside perimeter will penetrate the major part of the Departure floor area. The reduced use of artificial lighting will result in considerable energy savings.
Jet nozzles will be used to distribute conditioned air from fascias that are placed at relatively low-levels using thermal stratification (whereby air is allowed to heat up in graduating layers to high ceilings), therefore saving on energy use. Part load conditions of the air-conditioning/heating will also be controlled with variable-air-volume boxes and variable-speed-drive fans. The use of pre-filters and the selection of interior finishes such as granite flooring and molded plywood seating will help ensure essentially dust-free air quality.
Christopher Kearns from CPGairport elaborates on the energy savings aspects of the design in a technical paper entitled Benazir Bhutto International Airport: Design for Energy Conservation. The paper summarizes the main energy savings aspects according to three main areas of the design:
1) The building envelope which filters heat from the building exterior;
2) The heating, air-conditioning and mechanical ventilation (HVAC) system, which is the major electrical load;
3) The lighting system, which makes use of daylighting, and other cost effectiveness strategies in lamp/control gear selection, to reduce the energy consumption.
Many of the measures outlined have been used in the design of Changi Airport Passenger Terminal 3 by CPG, which as a guide, was initially benchmarked to achieve 20% savings in energy consumption compared to earlier terminal developments at the airport.♦
