This reminded me of an old joke:

A man goes to take delivery of his new car and doesn't return back home, next day his wife gets a call from him, he says he enjoyed driving the new car so much that he kept driving for a 1000 km, and realising it he informs his wife that he's on his way back..he returns after 4 days and his wife asks him why did it take him so long to return back to which he says 'the jokers installed 5 gears to go forward and only 1 gear to come back, hence the delay.

Hard to believe even though if it is true! Obviously she must have stopped at multiple border crossings & had to present her passport number of times. If she din't realize even then... there is something seriously wrong up there where thinking process takes place!!

There are no border checks anymore. Just a signpost that indicates you are in another country.

Well to be honest, there is one, when entering Croatia, which isn't in the Schengen agreement, but even there i think all you need is personal ID, not a passport. It probably started to dawn on her then, the city she ended up in (Zagreb) isn't far from the border.

Blue areas = no passport, although, civilian agents roam the highways and can stop you at any time and can do anything a customs officer would at a normal border crossing.

I don't think passports are asked for that often on the borders in Europe.

In going from Chicago to Madison, I went through Indiana (way south of Chicago, rather than Wisconsin, which is north of Chicago), back to Illinois, then to Iowa, and then to Wisconsin.

Only thing is, I did not have a GPS, and my friends were too high for me to stop and ask someone, they were very noticeable.
