Kuwait Hangs 3 In First Executions Since ’07
Ministry Denies Reports Of Live Coverage
KUWAIT CITY, April 1, (Agencies): Authorities in Kuwait on Monday hanged three convicted murderers in the first executions in the country since May 2007, the ministry of justice said.

The men, a Pakistani, a Saudi and a stateless Arab, were hanged at the central jail, west of Kuwait City, in front of judicial and security officials, the ministry said.

Pakistani Parvez Ghulam was convicted of killing a Kuwaiti couple and the Saudi national, Faisal Al-Oteibi, of stabbing a compatriot to death.

The stateless Arab, Dhaher Al-Oteibi, was hanged for shooting and killing his wife and five children after claiming he was a long-awaited imam.

Shiite Muslims rever Islam’s twelfth imam, Mohammad Al-Mahdi, who disappeared from the earth in the tenth century and is said to be due to return to save mankind.

Kuwait had six years ago stopped executing convicts sentenced to death without providing an explanation.

Public attorney Mohammad Al-Duaij, who supervised the executions, was cited by the official KUNA news agency as saying another 48 people are on death row awaiting a final decision on their sentences by His Highness the Amir.

Under Kuwaiti law, the Amir has the right to commute death sentences to a life term.

Among those on death row are two members of the Al-Sabah ruling family convicted over drugs trafficking and murder, and a woman who set a wedding tent ablaze in 2009 killing 57 people.

Kuwait has executed a total of 69 men and three foreign women since it introduced the death penalty in mid-1960. Most of those condemned have been convicted murderers or drug traffickers.

The Ministry of Information denied on Monday reports claiming that the execution of three persons convicted of murder was covered live by the state media networks.

The official media neither broadcast nor covered directly the execution, the ministry said in a statement, urging journalists to refer to the international media bureau of the ministry to check authenticity of the official news before being broadcast.

This office, which operates round the clock, is reachable on the internet and by telephone the statement said.

Good riddance.

No, they hang people. Nobody has the guts to carry the sword these days.

It's a shame is it not? Probably the most swift and effective method of execution. Moreover the most cheap one. Also works effectively to scare sissy boys that might think of committing a crime that is punishable with death. As little money as possible should be wasted on criminals that are already put to death. Moreover beheadings are a legal Islamic punishment which just excludes any debate whatsoever - at least it should be like that among Muslims.

Too soft. What's next? So-called "humane" lethal injections that are 1000 times as more expensive and costly to maintain. Heard horror stories about executions taking over an hour when performed on drug addicts.

Nah, the sword all the way.

The Bedoun are basically stateless people of mixed origins. Many are indigenous Kuwaiti Bedouins, Iraqi Bedouins and other nationalities. There is also evidence of them being stateless Arabs who sought refugee in Kuwait but were initially expelled just to return illegally. I must admit that I don't know the current situation in Kuwait but they should deal with it or expel them once and for all if they are not locals.
