BNP leader Barrister Moudud Ahmed Saturday said Bangladesh has become friendless internationally due to the incumbent government's "unilateral India-dependent foreign policy, reports UNB."
Moudud, who returned home last Thursday after two months' visit to the United States, made the remark in a written statement at a press conference at his Motijheel Law Chamber in the afternoon.
"Diplomatic relation and friendship is not the same thing," he said, adding that "now we are getting isolated day by day from the western and middle-eastern countries as Bangladesh as a sovereign nation has no independent foreign policy."
Moudud observed that under the present government, the image of Bangladesh as independent state has seriously been undermined abroad.
Asked about the issue of the caretaker government, he said the 15th Amendment to the Constitution is completely an "unconstitutional amendment."
"The entire 15th Amendment will be annulled in course of time through legal means, either in parliament or in court," said Moudud who is also a jurist.
He said a new provision (Article 7 kha) incorporated through the 15th amendment said the fundamental changes brought to the Constitution can never be amended whereas the Article 7 has stated that the people are the source of all powers.
About the Prime Minister's comment that non-deployment of army in the Naryanganj City Corporation (NCC) polls has not violated Article 126 of the Constitution, Moudud said it is not correct.
"Constitutional experts won't agree with her remark," he said, adding that "the government has directly violated the Constitution."
Replying to a question, Moudud said no democratic party or group can accept the government's proposal to hold the next general elections under an interim party government.
In his written statement, the BNP leader said democracy and elected government is not the same thing. The present government has exposed its extreme failure in exercising democracy and its values.
"The democratic structure of Bangladesh has been destroyed following the government's intolerance to all opposition opinions and parties."
He said: "When an elected government turns into autocratic ruler, democracy becomes non-existent. Now democracy in Bangladesh has no qualitative traits."
Moudud said three things have been clearly proved through the just concluded NCC polls: people no longer have confidence in the government, the government has lost its confidence in the army and the Election Commission never works neutrally and independently under a partisan government.
The BNP leader said the government will have to be forced to hold election under non-party, neutral caretaker government through united movement of all democratic forces under the leadership of Khaleda Zia to restore democracy in the country.
