INDIA CREDIT SPENDING STARTS WITH 6 DREDGERS
Tue, Aug 17th, 2010 8:52 pm

Dhaka, Aug 17 (bdnews24.com) –The government is going to start spending the billion dollar Indian credit by buying dredgers.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council, the government's highest economic policy forum, approved a project to this effect on Tuesday.

Planning secretary Habibullah Majumder said after an ECNEC meeting that Tk 4.72 billion of the credit package will be spent on buying six dredgers.

Economic Relations Division signed the loan agreement with India's Export-Import Bank on August 7 in Dhaka amid protest by main opposition BNP.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina presided over the meeting at NEC auditorium at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.

Majumder said the dredgers would cost Tk 6.39 billion, of which Tk 1.67 billion will come from the government.

Of the dredgers, one will be used by Mongla port, three by Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority and two by Bangladesh Water Development Board, he said.

The project will be implemented by 2012.

Foreign minister Dipu Moni had earlier said the government would implement 14 projects with the loan amount.

The ECNEC on Tuesday also approved a project for construction of a 30-kilometre line to import power from India. The government will provide Tk 3 billion and the Asian Development Bank Tk 7 billion for the project.

Under the project, the government will build a 400KV grid interconnection from Bheramara to Baharampur border, secretary Majumder said.

Once the project is implemented, according to him, Bangladesh can import 250 MW power per day in the first year and then 500 MW per day for the next 34 years.

Import of power will begin immediately after the project work ends by July 2012, he added.

The ECNEC also approved a Tk 13.10 billion project for the water ministry to buy 13 dredgers and other relevant equipment. The government will bear the total project cost.

It endorsed another project titled 'Augmentation of Gas Production under Fast Track' worth Tk 7.65 billion under energy and mineral resources ministry. The committee also approved three projects worth Tk 4.35 billion for the development of roads and railway. The government will finance the project.

It is turning out Bangladesh buying six dredgers (among other projects) from China with Chinese loan

China likely to provide $638 million loan

The Chinese government is likely to provide US$638 million loan to the government for procurement of vessels and upgradation of Cox's Bazar airport and the telecommunications networks, officials said Saturday.

China has already completed negotiations for the credit to implement three development projects, officials of the Economic Relations Division (ERD) said.

"We are hopeful of signing the loan deal by October this year. It will be one of the largest loan deals between the government of China and that of Bangladesh," said a Joint Secretary of the ERD.

The Civil Aviation Authority will upgrade the Cox's Bazar airport to an international standard, taking $225 million loan from China.

The Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC) will borrow $240 million to import six dredgers in a bid to enrich the fleet of the state-owned marine transport provider.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited (BTCL) will upgrade its network to the fourth generation of communication technology, by borrowing funds, worth $173 million, from the government of China.

An ERD official said the government agencies will complete the commercial contract first with the Chinese contractor for the works. "Then we will sign the loan deal."

Loose the colonial mentality and drop the "sir" bit. Awami League did not get the fund from its master india that is an utter shame. BUT Awami League did not abandon the scheme of looting money from these projects. While China is helping Bangladeshi people by providing loans, Awami League is looting money from these projects. And why on earth anyone should thank Awami League looting?

Long Live INDO-Awami League Friendship
Joy Hasina

CORRECTED! long live india-Awami League friendship on Chinese dime, that is very much summed up indian mentality. :omghaha:
