The 4th International Day of Yoga (IDY) is being observed in the country as elsewhere across the globe on Thursday with the theme of the year 'Yoga for peace'.

President Abdul Hamid sent a message on the occasion, says a media release.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, was present at the event as the chief guest while State Minister for Sports and Youth Dr Biren Sikder, Deputy Sports and Youth Minister Arif Khan Joy, among others, were also present.

Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Harsh Vardhan Shringla delivered the welcome speech at the programme.

Diplomats, film celebrities, national players, singers and dancers also joined the celebration programme.

Sports associations, Yoga associations and Institutes, students from various schools, intellectually challenged children, colleges and universities in Dhaka and outside Dhaka, Bangladesh Scouts participated in the celebrations of IDY.

Several celebrities from culture, sports and media also participated in the event, says the release.

Smt. Mumpy Dey, Teacher of Indian Culture at Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC), conducted the Common Yoga Protocol.

Demonstration of yoga asanas were also performed by yoga students of IGCC and other yoga institutes in Dhaka.

The organisers arranged a lucky draw at the event. Winners received a Tata Tiago car, a Bajaj Motorcycle, a Holiday Package to a destination in India, a Trip to Delhi for a couple and a Hospitality package for a couple in a five star hotel in Dhaka.

First prize-Tata Tiago car was won by Md. Khairul Hassan Khan.

This all sounds good except the shangi part.
And yoga is not our thing. This is a part of another religion. We already have namaz.

some people have joined it with religion , it must be clear that it has nothing to do with religion.

Namaz is not an exercise or can be equated to yoga. I have seen many Muslims saying we do namaz instead. It's just wrong.

true....with a little difference that in yoga you need to stay in a aasan for atleast 3 to 5 minits to get full benifits of it....

Namaz is not an exercise or can be equated to yoga. I have seen many Muslims saying we do namaz instead. It's just wrong.

yoga is also not an exersice...it do not have rapid movements...
yoga is mainly body postures.....called aasans.....you made your body into a perticuler posture....and kept it for 3 to 5 minits....

some people have joined it with religion , it must be clear that it has nothing to do with religion.

people will be people...
they even relate ayurveda to religion...
but they don't know the spices that they mix in their food stuff is all part of ayurveda teachings...

Just dont take it as religion, thats all. Cultural exchange is good thing. BD also has its own set of spiritual methods separate to religion. Cultural penetration should be done both ways.

Yoga is performed among Dhaka urban dwellers for some times. I can at least remember to early 2000s. Group of people used to perform in the park or open areas. But it was limited to small number of people. Later quantum meditation took over. Large number of people perform this. Yoga is only limited to this specific days and limited people. Buddhist Stupas in BD land suggests Meditation is old tradition. Other ways its done by Zikir. Connection to soul becomes stronger that way. It gives inner peace and motivation. People these days dont do zikir and milad kiam. Peace is missing among them. So they are in search for new things.
