NEW DELHI: India has airlifted "elements'' of its para-brigade based in Agra to Kalaikunda in West Bengal to deal with any contingency which arises due to the internal turmoil in Bangladesh.

Sources said over a battalion strength (over 1,000 soldiers) of the 50 Independent Parachute Brigade was moved on Sunday from Agra to Kalaikunda, which has a large IAF base.

"Depending on the situation, more could follow. With Bangladesh army progressively taking over from the paramilitary BDR in posts along the Indo-Bangladesh border, it's a precautionary move,'' said a source.

With India keen on securing Bangladesh's firm cooperation in rooting out anti-Indian terror and insurgent outfits operating from its soil, the armies from the two countries recently came together to hold their first-ever counter-terrorism exercise in February-March.

Over the last couple of years, New Delhi has actively worked towards bolstering ties with Dhaka - which included forging links with Bangladesh Army chief General Moeen U Ahmed, who took over the country's reins in early-2007 - with one of the main objectives being the need for both countries to "resolutely'' tackle terrorism together.

New Delhi wants Dhaka to act decisively against the over 100 suspected terror-training camps and hideouts of North-East insurgent outfits within its borders, apart from a hard crackdown on Harkat-ul-Jihad-Islami (HuJI), which has left its imprints in several terror attacks in India.

Bangladesh sure can learn lot from SriLankan experience. But in order to do so Bangladesh needs political leadership and govt which is NOT subservient to india. SriLanka has been blessed in this regard. Even with constant indian interference and bully SriLankan leadership did what best for country and triumphed.

Indian ships intrude into Bangladesh territorial waters

Bangladesh India News Dhaka - Dhaka has alleged three Indian ships illegally entered Bangladesh's territorial waters to carry out hydrocarbon exploration activities in the Bay of Bengal, media reports said Friday.

Foreign ministry officials said the government protested the Indian intrusion into Bangladesh's maritime boundary and on Thursday night dispatched a naval frigate to the area, asking the Indian ships to go back to their territory.

Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary, Touhid Hossain, said he had information that Indian ships entered Bangladesh waters. However, he refused to give details.

The Indian survey vessels started seismic survey activities some 140 nautical miles south-west of Mongla seaport, a Bengali language newspaper reported, quoting a navy source.

The alleged intrusion comes just three days ahead of Bangladesh's general elections, slated for Monday.

Bangladesh is yet to demarcate its maritime boundary in the mineral-rich Bay of Bengal with its neighbours - India and Myanmar - making it difficult to conduct oil and gas exploration.

India and Myanmar have already offered international oil giants rights for mineral exploration in their territories, which Bangladesh says partly overlap with its own territorial waters.

In November, tensions rose between Dhaka and Yangon over Myanmar's attempts to explore oil and gas in waters disputed by Bangladesh, prompting the two sides to send warships to the bay.

After almost two weeks of disagreement over offshore oil and gas exploration in the bay, the two sides agreed to stop mineral searches in the disputed waters until an agreement is signed finalising the demarcation of the maritime boundary between Bangladesh and Myanmar.

I had asked Idune some questions regarding Myanmar issue.I am still waiting for his reply.Let me give him a reminder.

1.How do plan to solve the maritime boundary dispute with Burma through talks,when the Burmese Generals claimed those territories as theirs and took a hard stance by sending war ships into our territory last November?Do you think negotiation is possible when it will come to oil and gas?

2.What do you think about the recent Burmese reinforcement along the Bangladeshi border?The Burmese are rapidly improving infrastructure,and even building an airbase near Bangladesh.Now why are they doing that?

3.Rohingya refugee,are they going to take these people back or they will remain here draining our economy and be involved in terrorist activities.

Nasaka, the border security force of Myanmar, opened fire on a group of Bangladeshi fishermen in Batirdia sea channel under Teknaf upazila near Saint Martin's Island, Thursday morning, leaving 11 fishermen wounded, according to a delayed report.

Bangladeshi fishermen have not been able to go fishing in the channel since the incident.

Fishermen said Nasaka fired gunshots at them within the maritime boundary of Bangladesh in East Bay of Bengal and looted their fishing nets and other valuables.

They said fishermen in Cox's Bazar area have been catching Hilsa fish in large numbers since June 1. Till Thursday they caught Hilsa worth about Tk 6 crore, they added.

"Nasaka entered into the channel Thursday morning and attacked us, so that we don't go fishing there," said a fisherman. He said Myanmarese citizens however have been fishing in the channel without any trouble since Thursday's incident.

Amir Hamza, 45, who fled from the channel in the face of the attack, said Nasaka have been attacking Bangladeshi fishermen in a bid to establish control over the channel.

According to witnesses, the Bangladeshi nationals were wounded when Nasaka opened fired on their trawler in Batirdia channel around 9:00am, forcing all Bangladeshis to flee the area, abandoning more than 100 trawlers and nets.

The same day, Nasaka also entered into Bangladesh's maritime territory through Sabrang border and looted Hilsa worth several lakhs of taka from a trawler, according to Bangladeshi fishermen. The Myanmarese border security force also beat up 13 fishermen of the trawler and threw them into the sea.

The fishermen were rescued by another Bangladeshi trawler in the afternoon. Five of them were seriously wounded, who are Mohammad, 50, Shafiq Ahmed, 39, Nurul Islam, 35, Abdur Razzak, 32, and Abul Foyez, 35. They were admitted to Teknak Upazila Health Complex.

Mohammad, who had been shot in the head, was later transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated, said Dr Md Lokman of the health complex.

President of Teknaf Boat Owners Association Rashid Ahmed said Bangladeshi fishermen are not secured in the sea, and are not wiling to go fishing following frequent Nasaka attacks on them.

"We are unable to fish when Hilsas are found in great numbers in the channel," he said adding that Nasaka have been patrolling the channel, so only Myanmarese fishermen may fish there without any trouble.

Rashid said two Bangladeshi fishermen were killed on April 8, when Nasaka opened fire on them.

Lt Monjur Ahmad, who is in charge of Bangladesh Coastguard in Teknaf, said they did not receive any written complaint about Thursday's incident, but he heard that a few Bangladeshi fishermen had been wounded by Nasaka firing. It is not safe for the coastguard to patrol the area since Nasaka are firing shots there, he added.

Saint Martin Union Parishad Chairman Firoz Ahmed said Nasaka looted at least 10 trawlers in the area in the last four months.

"They have been attacking us frequently, firing at fishermen and beating them, and also looting their valuables. In many cases, they kidnap our fishermen and release them after taking ransoms," he added.

Fish traders in Teknaf, Syedul Islam and Bashir Ahmed, said they could not supply Hilsa to Dhaka and Chittagong because fishing in Saint Martin's channel had been suspended since Thursday's Nasaka firing.
